70/71 442 transmission shifting

Driven a couple of cars lately....pretty hard shift from 1st to 2nd....in two of them, the other smooth. Assuming the smooth one was the one with the good transmission....is this hard shift common....but I guess most importantly is this an expense fix if I buy the car knowing I'll want it fixed?

OK, first, were all of the cars 70-71 442s with TH400? Do you know for sure that all were STOCK with no shift kit installed? A lot can happen to a car in 40+ years.

transmission shift

They were original 70/71 442 cars so I assume it was the 400. You mention the shift kit. I'm remembering when I drove a couple of 69 Camaros, several of them shifted hard from first to second as well, and if I remember correctly they said they had installed a shift kit. I have a 69 Camaro with the T350 and it shifts perfectly smooth with no "kick" from first to second or third.
