Muscle car tv
They call it a 69 Hurst Olds Tribute. However the paint sketches that they show will not be close to original. Niether the hood. I would guess a 6.2 going in there. They also said that this would be their largest build to date. ???????
It's supposed to just be a tribute not a numbers matching original, I'm glad they chose an olds and a good year to top it off. It's tv so we can't honestly expect them to be true to the numbers on it, plus they aren't olds enthusiasts. I can't wait to see how they tackle some of the ins and outs they give some good tips on the show.
Last season they built a '73 Buick Century and added a junkyard Buick 455. Hopefully they'll use a BB Olds for this build. I think it's cheaper for them to use an Olds or a Buick instead of a Chevelle or a GTO for their projects. Both of them are probably more affordable cars to begin with these days. (just my 2 cents)
This is the first time I have watched this program. For a 30 minute show - there was 20 minutes of commercials, 5 minutes of other content (charity drive and paint tips) and 5 minutes of Oldsmobile.
I don't think it is worth my time to watch any more episodes knowing they are just going to customize the hell out of this car. I'd rather spend the 30 minutes on classicoldsmobile.com

Also on Desert Car Kings, they did a white 70 442. Don't know why some of these shows put a 'drop dead' timeline into the show. The 70 had 3 weeks for a full blown resto, including a motor rebuild. Car sold for around 15K IIRC so the kid who bought it got a nice car for decent money.
But I don't get how a full resto 442 wouldn't have the right sport mirrors instead of crappy 5buck specials just bolted to the door. They even went to the effort of converting the car to a Dual Gate shifter, but didn't bother to clean or rechrome any of the shifter parts.
Some of these shows are a waste of time.
Don't get Spike TV. It's on the extra $$ list. Do they have a web link to the project?

This car is getting an LS for sure. Tommy Bosher (one of the hosts) stated that technology has come a long way in 40+ years since the car was built and they will be updating the drivetrain and the handling of the car.
Get out the eye bleach. It's going to be an LSx swap and pro touring.
These shows are all half advertisements, gotta afford production costs + all the parts. You dont think they actually pay for $3k serpentine accessory drives?

They do and here it is, but I couldn't get the Oldsmobile video to work. Sometimes shows that air on a weekend don't get posted to the web site until Monday or Tuesday.

BTW, that's a heck of a job. Get dropped into a state of the art shop with all the cool tools you need and be told to build cars. And get paid for it!

The show aired on Saturday morning and repeats on Sunday morning. I can get other videos to play, just not the Olds one. So I'm just guessing it isn't loaded to the web yet.
I missed the first few minutes where they were acquiring the car and probably most of the footage showing the car before taking it apart. I'd like to see that part because the car looked like it was a decent driver as is. From what it sounds like they're going to do to this car, I wish they would have started with a stripped out shell from a parts car instead.
If I was to believe what it says, next weekend isn't about the Olds.

Hey Guys. Just want to FYI y'all on the next new episode which is February 11 @ 12:30 pm. I dont know what they'll be doing to the Olds build, but I do know that my car will be the featured Flashback segment. So if you want to see a restored 69 Olds, then watch the episode. I will also be posting this info in a seperate thread to alert others who are not watching this one.
Hope you enjoy it!

I really think they are going to drop a LSx in that Cutlass, but at least they made the Buick guys happy last season, when they swapped out the top end of that Buick 455 for a better top end.
Plus Joe Mondello's build was on the Horsepower show, not Muscle Car

Sense they said the thing about modernizing , I'd like to see a 455 with MSD ignition and injection , 6spd trany , Hotchkis extreme suspension make over or something similar , maybe rack steering , BIG brakes and new Hurst wheels .
And a new look / better seats , less of a resto-mod look inside . With a 6pt bar and livable seat belts . I like harnesses , but it must be comfortable .
As far as Horsepower vs. Muscle Car ... one in the same , and part of the same 2hr advertising block .. I mean Power Block ..
The motor an't no good just sitt'n on the stand !

But at least they advertise car stuff. I watch a news channel during the week and every 10 minutes they have an ad for cholesterol or ED drugs with the last half listing all the possible side effects. Then there's the ads by law firms that sue drug companies for the folks that got screwed up by the drugs.
The ads for car stuff are fine by me.
I got a Gearhead / PowerBlock e-mail and part of the add is Art Morrison's new A body chassis
http://artmorrison.com/chevelle.php
I'm guessing this will be the modern chassis for the Olds .

That would be a neat update to the suspension and steering.
I've seen shows where they use motors from the Horsepower show Extreme 4x4 used one in their mudracer and Trucks used their Blue Flame 140 build in Project class six, so the Mondello motor isn't a lost thought, they may use it and plus what better way for a high viewed show to pay homage to an industry icon.
Sometime between now and last night they got the video loaded. The whole half hour show runs 16 minutes without the commercials. And they still slipped in a “sponsor message” or two. The Olds part is the first 7 minutes.
It will be worth watching on February 11 to see WTony's 69.

Well, after watching the vid, exciting to see an olds! Hopefully, someone else will be painting it! That cowl hood paint job won't last too long on a car. They scuffed with red scotchbrite, then went right to paint. Painting over e-coat is a big no-no...
E-coat or electrocoat is a process of applying a coating usually at the plant where the parts are stamped, to prevent it from rusting. It has ZERO chip resistance, and needs to be topcoated with a 2K or 2 component surfacer such as sealer before paint. The mistake I see quite often is that guys will sand the e-coat, making it even thinner(in essence leaving not enough mils to even protect it from rust) and spraying color over it directly. Eventually, especially in the eastern part of the country, it will break down and rust will start to "crawl" underneath the finish, resulting in delamination. Most auto refinish co's(ie dupont, akzo, basf and spies hecker) carry a sealer that can be applied directly over unsanded oem e-coat, therefore preserving the e-coat(protecting the metal from rust) and also saving on labor cost....
ok
I thought they had shot sealer/surfacer over the e coat after scuffing and cleaning .
What I would have done , maybe I got distracted and didn't watch there whole process .
I have heard of guys completely removing the e coating , which GM told us was unnecessary .
