Got head gaskets from Mondellows and the label says apply two thin coats of aluminum paint to metal side allow to tach up and torque to specs.I called and they said I could use the copper spray. But if thats the case why didn't they say that.Any body ever heard of this?

Years ago, I bought head gaskets from Mondello, and they said to spray them with the copper spray,I did, no problem. His teck manual also says to. The only thing that I have a problem with, if you use Fel Pro, it says to use as is. The ones I sprayed, are on my sons 68 W30, and that was about 10 years ago, and still no problem

copper coat

Yes, I have heard of this in ag industry.
Usually clean both block and head, I ususally use a razor blade to get residual gasket material and take laquer thiner to both to get the oils off,
then spray a coat onto both sides of gasket, install head and torque to spec! To achive proper torque I chase each hole with a tap and with compressed air blow out any residual debris and then apply a thin coat spray lube to the threads and back of each head bolt.

Regards, Pat

I do recall seeing the spray aluminum, but it's not regular paint. Got my custom heads from Dave Smith Olds in CA, and recommended the Permatex copper spray, so that's what I used. It's been several years now, and never had any problems.
