I found a 74 Omega that I think I'll make my boys 1st car. Problem is I don't think he will like it since its not a 69 Camaro or a lifted Toyota 4X4.
That means I'd have to keep it for myself () when we find what he wants.

Anything I should look be aware of?

 

Uh... well, I better figure out what to tell my wife. Just agreed to buy it.

 

i'm not a huge fan of the 73/74 with the funky quarter window... but lot of nova parts available could make it cool.

I always thought the purpose of the "first car" the parents provide was to make the kid want to save up money for their "SECOND" car... I know thats the way it worked for me. POS 1976 honda accord. Peeling paint... Belched blue smoke for first 5 mins it would run... Rear hatch window leaked & would actually get ice on the inside on winter days (you really look like a dope when you are scraping the INSIDE o your windows....) I was sooo happy when the motor finnaly blew a head gasket and I had an excuse to get a "newer" old car.

Put some cheap tire store chrome modular wheels on it w/ white letter tires, flowmaster 70 mufflers (cool sounding, but not too loud) and he'll probably dig it.
A macco bright white paintjob to match your 65 might help too...

Just hope his friends don't teach him about neutral drops, otherwise you'll have to teach him how to rebuild transmissions

 

Funny thing. The reason I was looking at it was the funky quarter window. was wondering about mix and match 68-71(2?) Nova quarters on a Omega.
I daydream too much, look what happens.LOL.
I may end up doing a scrub and flip? hard to say.
Oh it already has what looks like a newer Flowmaster exhaust.

Jr. was only so-so last night when I showed him the cell phone pics. Before that I asked him if he liked Nova's. No hesitation it was NO! "Too bland". Well I recall thinking a 68 Falcon was too bland and pleaded with my dad not to buy it. I got a wrecked (bad) 68 Dart but it was a GT V8.
Ended up parting it out.
So the Mrs. is uncomfortable because we are down to one income but I could tell she likes it. It may end up being a quick flip? But I'm taking a liking to it and I bet when Jr. hears those Flowmasters he will too.
Tough economy but for $600. I don't think I can go too wrong?

Forgive my lack of photoshop skills but here is the idea I had in my head about using a Nova 1/4 window. Would be way too big of a project but one can dream.

 

Do they make a cool hood or spoiler or anything for that car? I'm sure some stripes and fat tires would make it look better.

 

Pretty new to the Omega, still looking around at sites and parts. Yep it needs something.

found a donor Ventura with the "Nova" style rear glass. IF I had the time and space I'd be all over it.

would be a lot easier to take the Omega front clip & all the other Olds specific stuff and put it on the earlier body style car....

Just clean it up and drive it. Guy on Craigslist up in arlington has been pushing a set of appliance/fake cragar rims & tires for $500... I'll bet $400 would take em.

 

When the guy dropped it off he said he forgot he had a craigslist ad.

Here in California those 74 and 75 cars are turned in to super sleepers. Any thing after 75 has to be smog tested.

I'd consider copying a 70 442 hood. On CL there was a late seventy something louvered hood for cheap. Nothing like that is in the cards yet.
Plus the hood spear looks to be in great shape.

 

Have to admit that has crossed my mind. I do have a couple extra big blocks waiting to be built.

Agree'd its funny how my brain works. I've got all these very different plans going in my head.

The engine is gold which makes me wonder why? rebuild? newer model year. I think it should be blue. I know lots can happen between 74 and now. have to check #'s and see if I can determine what it is.

 

I can see why the kid wouldn't like it. I was the same way at that age. You have to lead them to show them it could be cool.

Could be a fun runner.

I know someone who could fix up those seats for you, if they make covers for them...

This reminds me so much of my son't first car. He is 43 now (birthday this year will be 11/11/11). I guess he was about 17 and we bought a 1970 Nova. It was parked in front of a house and we went up and rung the bell and bought the car for $500. It was rusty blue but it was only surface rust and the body was solid. It had a 350 with a glide. We worked our butts off on it and got it ready for paint. I had a guy spray it Porche Guards red for 75 bucks with me furnishing the paint. We put Chevy rally wheels on it and a set of twin turbos. It was a sharp little car but it looked worse than yours when we got it. Of course that was a long time ago and kids didn't have rice burners with popcorn fart exhaust on them. Good luck. I like the car.

It keeps growing on me. Had it run for less than a minute. May need a fuel pump. Some times its hard to prime a pump that has been sitting.
Took the top off the Qjet and took a peek filled the bowl with gas hoping it would get the pump going but no dice. Sounded good for a few seconds.
Still trying to figure out how to open the dang trunk. I just know there is treasure back there.
Did some cleaning Friday night but it was dark by picture time. The dents are much more noticable.
Was pretty funny figuring out the seat belt has to be on to start.
I would hear the relay and looking under the dash would take my weight of the seat and it would turn over. Then back to clicking and buzzing.
Should have read the manual.

I can't beleive there that cheap,But there wasn't the beather with them.I saw 2 of the breathers at Carlisle a year or so a go I'm pretty sure they were around $600.The one hood I saw was $400 or $500 And pretty sure there were only 2700 made.I only ever saw 1 I have pic on my phone if I could only get it off and on my computer.Also the hood dosn't look like it would fit.

I would like to get this set up on my Omega...Omegas will never be worth **** so I have no issue messing with it....I am just not talented enough to know it if would fit or how to get it to fit...lol

I think if you can get that puppy running, you got a steal on the deal! Gee, when I was a teenager, I bought mhy '40 Ford, then my '50 88, then my '50 98 H/T, by throwing papers and working at the A & P. Paid my own insurance, also. Telll your son "he like's it"!!!! LOL! when I was 16 you couldn't have paid me to drive a nova or an omega but i sure do like that car now. I thinks it will be a cool fun car to drive. heck it has a 1970 oil cap on it, that alone is worth 20 bucks

Had it running 4 or 5 times and it has yet to keep running once the carb runs dry. Time for a fuel pump I think.

 

Definetly the fuel pump. Runs and drives! Slips in reverse jury is out on weather I need a trans or not.
Really thinking this would be a better platform for my mild 455 I'm putting together. Added centerline front runners, uneeded at this point but was a good deal.

 

On a whim I removed the rear bumper, to remove the shocks and it sorta snowballed. Found what looks like Ventura back panel under the Olds plastic. Now I have to decide if I will narrow the bumper and shorten the sides. Some welding in my future

Finished pulling the trans today, in the truck waiting for a trip to the tranny shop tomorrow. Started to cut down the inner bumper but needed a new blade in the sawsall. Tired from wrestling the trans into my truck by myself. Called it a day.
