I have read a few threads regarding bad oil pressure, knocking engines and similar issues.
What are your opinions about which is the toughest engine, by toughest I mean engines that have soldiered on for miles after they were obviously in need of attention, drinking oil, rattling bottom end etc.
I think the 307 is a good candidatefrom the Olds stable.
A slant 6 225 I had in a Dodge truck managed about 30k miles despite a blown head gasket, 10 psi oil pressure, and needing a quart of oil every time I filled it up with gas before it finally knocked out a rod bearing. Even then it made the 100 mile trip home after I put some ep90 gear oil in it.

So what engines have gone above and beyond the call of duty for you?.

I think my 67, 330/4v is an example of that. 126000 original miles, no bottom end work, recent 1st time valve job due to a blown head gasket (hey I was there anyway), Still running all the original lifters, rockers and pushrods, has 35#'s oil pressure cold, drops to 9 warm, and still makes good power! Not bad for an engine that when I was a kid, 60000 miles was the kiss of death!

 

My 2001 F250 had a diesel 7.3 with a turbo. It ran 13.65 in the quarter and is still running today with well over 200k on it.

 

I had a '68 Merc. Colony Park wagon with a high-comp. 390 in it, with 167,000 miles and a nasty rod knock that would still blow off Camaros.

$25 car and I drove it like I stole it.

Didn't meet its maker till it was rear-ended while parked (the girl said she sneezed ) - in the pre-internet days, the tailgate and rear bumper were unobtainable, so off to the crusher it went...

2.5 liter iron duke Gave it to my brother with 200,000 miles on it. Drove the Hell out of it had to have over load springs in it from day one I did horse shoeing at the time . pulled snowmobiles up north and would always start in the coldest of cold.

 

we had a 350 from a 77 cutlass that has over 300,000 miles on it and never rebuilt. it even has the original fuel pump! the carb was rebuilt two time and at least 3 water pumps. the most major thing ever done to it was to change the timing chain and gears at over the 250,000 mile mark. this engine still don't use oil. well it uses less than 1 qt every 3000 miles but it did that since new according to dad. at 200,000 miles the car was junked and the engine put into an 81 Pontiac Catalina. that car was totaled and it went into an 83? delta 88. my dad finally had that car hauled off for scrap. i was so mad, i wanted to put it into another car and see how long it would go.
