Any Poncho fans out there???

While picking up the 1966 Cutlass I'm parting out I spotted an old wagon in the guys yard. I really like wagons so I asked if I could check it out and take some pictures for a friend. It turns out to have the overhead cam 6 cylinder engine with a 3 on the tree manual transmission. This could be a cool wagon... even if its not an Oldsmobile! It's for sale but I think his price is too high at $3,000. Not the kind of thing one sees every day so I thought I'd share some pictures with you guys. John

Straight six, three on the column and rubber mats.

Excellent car. Made to take abuse and keep on going.

Looks pretty clean, haven't seen one of those in a long time. Hope someone snatches it up and restores it.

Sweet!

Did you happen to notice if the pod right of the steering wheel was a tach?

Henry,
Like this one. I had it about 3 years ago. Tell Mark hello for me.

Thanks, it was a honey. One of my friends wouldn quit until I let him have it, when he got tired of it I had something else and couldn't buy it back.
I'd love to have the Pontiac wagon, but that's a long way off for one that doesn't (apparently) run.
This was last years wagon.

Nothing like having a Pontiac in your garage as well, so it will make your Olds look so much the better!

Our family car up until 1983 was a '67 GTO that my mom got new so I have a big soft spot for those, want to end up with one some day and build it just like ours was.

You could get those cars with the 4bbl. Spring engine.

Otherwise, top engine option was the 326 HO rated at 280 hp.

Interesting car and engine. Wondering what kind of dependability and performance that overhead cam produced. Seems like there weren't that many engines like that around at that time, at least US made cars. This is the first I have heard of.

They made a lot of them, although it was a V-8 world at the time. I think they had timing belt issues?

That wagon is way past cool.

The reason the OHC 6 never took off was because as stated above, in those days it was a V8 world. In the right chassis the Sprint version was a screamer, and being lighter than V8's was better for handling and autocrossing (called gymkhanas back then).

Somebody save it. If all the body looks as good as the pics, it's a good start. Convert that OHC to a Sprint and have a ball!

I always wondered why they named the optional suspension pkg for the mid 70's Camaro "Gymkhana" (thanks Rocketraider!)

It's a good thing this car is so far away, even at $3K, it's tempting. I'd probably look for the 4bbl setup also & maybe switch the dummy-plate out for the rally clock... Hopefully someone will save it without painting it some awful color & adding the cliche GTO hood/emblems/etc.

Had a 66 Lemans Sprint years back. Loved that car. One of the few out of 50 something that I really miss. The sound of that six when the secondarys opened on that Q-jet was awesome!
