Just wondering if anyone knows what car an rocket symbol dog dish hubcap would of came on? My dad has 2 and I would like to get 2 more to get a full set. I guess I can take pictures if you guys need them. Thanks

 

Need more to go on. Every dog dish I can think of has the rocket on it. Pic?

 

There are numerous Oldsmobile hubcaps. I had a set on my 64 98 that I got off of a 63 88. They didn't have the Oldsmobile rocket they had the stylized emblem that was used in the early 60s.

 

I am aware of a few dogdish caps with Olds Rocket emblems on them. A pic would probably be needed.

3. There was a style used in the mid 70s-early 80s I think, which I cannot find a pic of, but are generally cheap-looking aluminum with a black embossed Rocket emblem in the center (they otherwise look very much like these Buick caps, excepting the emblem):



4. Late 60s Plymouth (joking, but I've seen people selling these thinking they were for an Olds):




The above covers are what I am aware of. There are also some 66-70 Toronado and mid-late 70s H-body caps, etc. etc. with Rocket emblems that are not really hubcaps as most understand the term, but rather press-in center caps.

 

The 62 Olds dogdish caps had the Olds emblem/crest in red on them, not a rocket. There a pics of them in the photo section on my Olds web site - http://freewebs.com/jeandaveyaros

 

I don't know anything about tranny's, but the year was '53, not '54.

An internet search indicates the fire occured on August 12, 1953; perhaps Mr. Yaros (or the source he quoted on his website) assumed that by that date, the 1954 models would already have been in production.

My first recollection of the Rocket on wheelcovers is 1962. It was the highly stylized "flattened Rocket" that used 62-64 on both dogbowls and full wheelcovers. 58-61 used the crest, which was again highly stylized from its original design. I had to stop and think a minute on 1957 since the 57 hood and trunk ornaments are the first use of the "flattened Rocket", but all 1957 caps had a small gold painted oval dot with four points, more like a star than a Rocket.

65-66 dogbowls had Rockets as shown above. I can honestly not remember the details of 68-73, but some of those years had them, others just had OLDSMOBILE stamped into the cap. 74-later were the cheapy stamped aluminum caps, same as the Buick version Aliens showed us.

An aside to OP- there was a gorgeous Royal Plum 1967 Caprice Sport Sedan here for many years. Its original elderly owner died and her heirs sold this gorgeous car to a local junkyard for scrap value, rather than take the time to try to sell it to someone who would appreciate it. Last time I saw it, its 396 and ALL the 396 emblems were gone, and the near perfect body and interior were left to rot in that junkyard. That one really hurt me, because I know the bigblock and emblems ended up in a damn Camaro or Nova.

See, it's not only big Oldsmobiles I hate to see get raped for their bigblocks.

Well after looking at them over the weekend they are the cheap aluminum ones like the Buick ones you posted. Any idea what car they came on other than late '70's early '80's?

 

Oldsguy had some of the poverty hubcaps on his 76 Olds Omega. They were very similar to the Buick hubcaps only they were stamped with an Olds Rocket.

 

Check out the following thread from ROP a couple years back that I just found after recalling a discussion about these particular caps; one member there mentioned seeing these also used on 78-80 Cutlass wagons. Probably they were used on a variety of models/years. I expect that some will show up on Ebay soon enough (doesn't everything if you wait long enough?)

I have dog dishes on my 68 Delmont, but mine look different than those.

Ted - Don't understand your reply. Is there a time limit for responding to a thread? If the originator of the email still has the same address, won't they get an email notification?

 

If you find this information of use thats great but after three years if someone hasn't found a couple of hubcaps I would be very surprised. My intention was to let others who may spend time researching something that has long ago lost its importance. I'm not sure what you mean E Mail notification but please don't E Mail me anything that I asked about three years ago.

Search function will find any thread with the keywords he put in no matter how old. He's trying to find out what the caps on his 68 Delmont with 15" wheels are.

I had actually kind of forgotten about this thread until I got an email telling me it had updates. When I originally posted this I just wanted to know approximately what vintage these where. My dad has 2 of them they were on his old winter tires for the '83 and then the '87 Cutlass. I had considered trying to find 2 more and possibly running them on my '69, but now I know they wouldn't look right. If I decide I want to switch up my wheels I'll run the correct '69 dog dish hubcaps. Thanks to all who have posted. I hope it helped some one other than me.
