How does one identify vintage parts using the GM part numbers plainly marked on OEM packaging? The google search does not seem to recognize the numbers that I enter. Seems like in the past, that this was not an issue. Now that I am cleaning shop, searching the number is just not working. I'm sure the parts are discontinued, but with all the info on the net, I don't see what is going on (with Olds parts at least).
This is what I do. You'll need more than one manual for other years. But, I have a .pdf file of the 1975 Oldsmobile Parts Catalog (images below). Because it is a good .pdf file, you can search the 1975 Oldsmobile Parts Catalog by part number. If not mistaken, this Parts Catalog covers 1964-1975. Other Oldsmobile Parts Catalog files are available for download on our site. If you don't know where to look, I can find the link for you. NOTE: After you download a Parts Catalog .pdf file, you'll notice at the top of the file "Find Text or Tools". Simply enter the part number you want to search and it will demonstrate the areas contained w/in the catalog which contains that part number.
O.K. Thanks, I just tried that and says part 3633571 discontinued. I guessed that, but I need to know what it is/fits. Stashed with Cadillac & Olds parts in GM wrapper.

An Internet search reveals part number 3633571 is a 1971-75 Cadillac Eldorado Rocker Panel Trim
O.K. That explains why that number doesn't show up in the excellent reference you guided me to. Now after downloading that comprehensive reference, it seems there is no reference to head restraints, mandated in '68, but no illustration or part number associated.
Thanks again for the tip, now I have to get in the 50's parts. Most of these parts I have are marked and there is not so many models, so I can ID many through photos.
There are a couple Parts Illustration Catalogs (if you dare). One or two have .pdf files you can search, the behemoth (1970 Oldsmobile Illustration Catalog LK) you can't search inside the file because the file was not created in Adobe but was saved as an Adobe (.pdf) file. It contains an astronomical listing of images dating back to at least 1959. Ya gotta really have to have a mind to find the Group No. and idea what you're looking for though. It's formidable.
