Ignition switch wire color code
Ignition switch wire color code
I have a ‘72 Cutlass Supreme. The steering column was replaced with a Flaming River tilt column. My problem is the ignition switch actuator rod gets stuck. I can turn on but not start. I can tap the bottom of the steering column and it will start. I’ve replaced the actual switch so I know it’s not the problem. I assume the original rod is not designed for a tilt column.
The only solution I see is to install push button start. I need to know what the different colored wires go to. I’ve tried looking at the wiring diagram but my eyesight is poor and I can’t read it.
thank you for your advice.

The OEM column has the ability to adjust the switch - and there is a specific process in the Chassis Service Manual that includes moving the switch slider to a specific position first. This is covered on page 9A-44 of the 1972 Chassis Service Manual. I cannot tell you if an aftermarket column has this provision or not. Also be aware that tilt and non-tilt columns use different ignition switches, so be sure you have the correct one.
Thank you. I will check it out in my manual and also confirm I have the correct switch. I bet it is wrong. I was not the one who replaced the column. It was the original switch and I fairly certain that it didn’t originally have tilt.
Again, I have no idea what that aftermarket column uses. The OEM columns use different switches for tilt and non-tilt.
