Question Ignition switch for tilt column adjustment

I am reassembling a tilt column for my 72 and everything has gone beautiful until re-installing the ignition switch. It seems like if I set everything as stated in the service manual the switch needs to slide roughly 1/4-1/2 inch closer to the bowl assembly to even engage with the screw holes to fasten it let alone allow me any adjustment on the rod. What am I doing wrong? The column went back together very nicely till this point. Has anybody else ever had this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

Do you have it oriented the right way? and the correct switch for a tilt car? I ask because tilt and non-tilt switches are almost identical, except you flip it 180 degrees to make it work for the other application.
