These are the real mccoy. The price is right too. Fusick sells repros for 49.00 These ones are NIB for 50.00. I just bought another couple because it's too good to pass up. At last count, it looks like there's about 24 left.

 

Must clarify.....these are the BOLT IN type for early SSII wheels.

 

yup, as it states in the ebay auction: 1968-73 Oldsmobile SSII bolt on wheel caps. New old stock from the mid-1980's, still in original GM boxes. Brand new, no damage, perfect. The rocket logo is embossed too, not the later flat version.

SS11 is bolt on. SS111 is clip on. you just have to know what wheels you're running on your car, right? This was just posted as info to those who are interested.

Not true. That designator was only for the wheel color. The SSII were argent grey and the SSIII were lower body color.
They changed the cap design after 1973 due to people having issue with the bolts I'm sure.

 

Fusick does not sell repros. They are still OEM units being produced, therefore they cannot be repopped. you can take the number off them and order them right from the dealer. Another example of that is the 71/72 stone shield. Still available from the dealer, therefore not repopped.

I have some SSIII wheels as backup to my SSI's (which are on the car). I'm curious as to which cap (bolt on or clip) are owners of SSII and SSIII wheels using? Which cap is favored over the other.

 

It depends on the style & size of the SSII/SSIII wheel since the caps are not interchangeable
The bolt-on caps will only fit the bolt-on style wheels available in size 14x6, 14x7 or 15x7.
The snap-on caps will only fit the snap-on style wheels available in size 14x6 or 15x7 (NOTE no 14x7)

 

14 X 7 wheels exist with the snap on centers. I have owned a few sets in the past.

The CORRECT wheel for your car (in the avatar) would be the 14 X 7 bolt on center painted the body color. SSIII wheels. I personally prefer the bolt on type as they are very hard to steal or fall off.

The 14 X 6 Bolt on center wheels were painted argent (greyish silver) and came on 1968-1969 Cutlass/442

I have never ever seen a set of those. I'd REALLY like to see some pics of those. I'm not doubting you (too much ) John, but I'd like to see those.
I have only seen 14 x 6.

Sorry buddy I have to go with Randy on this one. My 76 442 came with SSII's (Cast gray). SSIII's are SSII's painted body colour in the snap on cap era.

1966-1972 SSI Also referred as magnum 500 wheels for other makes.

1968-1969 14 X 6 SSII bolt on centers.

1970-1974 (ish) SSIII painted body color; or chrome; bolt on center. 14 X 7 or 15 X 7

1975 and UP SSIII Snap on center; 14 X 6, 14 X 7, 15 X 7 painted body color or chrome.

Runs pretty much in line with what I have been saying. I got one year off on the SSII rims though. It does mention the SSIII being available in the 14 X 7 size.

Ok - would someone take a look at one of the millions of pictures I have posted on this site of the prettiest one, and tell me what wheels are on her? I'd like to have a new set of center caps. I went out and looked at mine and I can feel 4 bolts going around by sticking my hand inside the openings. The Rocket emblems are gray/silver though, not red? I thought I had the SSII wheels, but what do I know?? That's why I have you guys!! LOL Thanks!!

You've got SS III [an SS II painted body color] with bolt on center. The red may have faded out.

John, you're a year off on the SSII, and you failed to mention that starting in 1971 the SSII *and* SSIII were available.
And svnt442 posted the wheel info links because they are correct, not just because they're there!
The info could use a bit more tweeking, but it is essentially correct.

Guys, please bookmark those pages so when this comes up again (like it has in the past), we can cut to the chase instead of weeding though the misinformation posted!

I can't tell you. I purchased one set from a yard that had them on a Monte Carlo. I put them on my 87 Cutlass with a set of 215/70/15's on it that is gone away. The second set I acquired one wheel at a time and made the mistake of selling them at the Food Lion Auto fair in Charlotte a couple years back. So until I put hands on another, I got nothing....

I got into a discussion a while back (when I first found these forums) and was corrected by Joe P. I had been under the assumption that the SSIII were strictly snap on centers, and he schooled me. So I try and pass on that information every chance I get.

Sorry about the dig on the links... the first thing I thought of was the classifieds on 442.com of which I hold little confidence in thier information in unless I see something posted by JoeP, or Chris Witt...etc...

Do you really mean 215/70/15's? These tires will not fit on the 14x7 snap-on centers.

nope... I meant 215/70/14. I remember this like yesterday because I hunted down a set of Firestone Firehawks for $48 each back in 1995 In Bordentown NJ. I had just purchased my 87 Cutlass with some nasty chrome baby moon rims and tinted windows out of Philly...
