Has anyone had issues with heat soak using the 9510 starter? I’ve ran this starter on my 10:1 olds 455 for about 3 years now and after I got the car out of hibernation it just barely cranks over when hot.It fired right up after sitting for about 5 months during the winter with no problem . I’ve since tested the battery it comes in at 12.54 volts and with the car running 14.45 volts . It’s a 800 cca battery and seems to be up to par .I’m running Thornton shorties with what seems to be plenty of room around the starter. As I said it takes right off when it’s cold but struggles to turn the motor over once it’s been driven a bit . I’m using the factory grounds on the 80 cutlass and put a new positive battery cable on back when I did the engine swap. I did back off my timing a couple degrees at a time with no change. I have no problem just replacing it if need be but wanted to hear thought on this first

 

I've never had an issue with heatsoak. However, their method of attaching the activation wire leaves much to be desired. You can get repair parts from Summit. I ended up buying a new one after some failed repairs.
Inspect your battery cables thoroughly, as their resistance increases with temperature and that will make a less than perfect cable show as worse.

 

I have considered getting larger more heavy duty cables I’m not sure what guage wire they used in my application but , I doubt it was intended for a 10:1 455

 

How old is your engine harness?

As mentioned, your battery cables could be causing too much resistance, but so can the solenoid wire "S", the purple wire. It goes all the back through the neutral safety switch and ignition switch, so a couple of other places to look for corrosion/high resistance.

 

My headers get real hot after a long highway trips. After cooking two normal starters. Installed the powermaster 9510 with Thermo tec starter heat shield. And a Ford type starter relay by the battery. Had no problems since. Inspection cover off also, I do not go down gravel road.

Well I’ll be damned ! It was an easy one for a change . I decided to start with the easy stuff like checking all my wiring connections and stumbled on a loose ground at the battery . I tried to snug it down a bit and of course it stripped . ( not a fan of these side post ) anyway I temporarily wrap some stranded copper wire around the post threads at work to get home and will address it today . Thanks for the tips I’ve had heat soak in starters before and automatically thought the worst .
