Now that I finally know how to post some better pics, I thought I'd share some that I took at the July 18 Olds show in Olds Alberta. My theme on this post is the Futuramic 88. These 2 machines are as stunning as anything I can think of in their age group. The blue one is fabulous and still has the original interior. The Pinkish one is a mod but looks killler!

I think the Futuramic has got to be one of the finest looking classics out there. I saw one last Sat nite at the local car show with guilded 24k gold - front and back hood "World" ornaments. It is a phenomenal car that took the show IMO.

 

That really hits a note with me that is awesome. I am a big fan of all 50's, early 60's retro modern styling especially 50's. My home interior is is even decorated with 50's and 60's streamline modern furniture and decor from those eras. That would do the garage up nicely.

The Futuramic was introduced in 1948 and replaced the series 60 and Series 76 cars produced from 46 through 48. Both body types were produced in 48. Put the two side by side and the difference is dramatic. This was the big change for GM from the preware to post war model years. Great body style and lines. The little door over the key hole was common on many cars, looked nice but was a bitch when they froze shut in. had to heat it with a match to move it then heat the key to get it into and turn the lock.

 

Nice, even the checkerboard tile theme going on! Kudos to the decorator I love it.

 

Al, a couple of our members own those. Merl Jones owns the red coupe and Lorne From owns the blue sedan which I believe is a 1949 98 if I'm not mistaken. The Gray car in the picture I think is the other '50 owned by Bob Herron

I didn't remember the guy's names. There was so much to see that day it made my head spin. I didn't get any pictures of the Gray car unfortunately. Both the Blue sedan and red coupe were badged as Futuramic 88's.

I used to do "big pictures" but it seems Photobucket" won't give up the img code so I use the photo options on the forum....until I either figure it out or find another site to host my pix.

I'll be around. Long weekend coming up, so I'll be in my garage prob. Stop by when yopu have a chance. Maybe we can do a junkyard run to see what's there? They will probably be closed for Thanksgiving Monday, but should be open Sat and Sun.

 

Here is a couple of shots of my friend 50 88 convertible parked in front of my house. He has never driven the car. He also owns the 54 on my signature. The 54 is actually a nicer car and we have the history all the way back to the original owner and the original invoice.

Allen, I don't know how big of a show that was but looking at your pictures there was a lot of Oldmobiles represented there!!! Much better than the shows around my part of the country. John

I think the three red lights could be aftermarket turn signal indicators, the center one being a brake indicator. Maybe.....

I also noticed the rocket logo on the valve covers and the air cleaner housing. I really like that look and the choice of colors on both. Must agree, beautiful cars!

Could also be a trailer queen. Some car guys simply want to preserve what they have in the same pristine condition forever. It's saide that beauty and appreciation are in the eyes of the beholder. To each their own I guess. Man would that vert be a nice addition to a show!

Love your comparison, but if my wife found out I had a playmate that I'd spend more time watching and touching she might have something to say about it. On the other hand, if I decided to USE the playmate as it was intended, I would probably have a nice concrete bed to sleep on with all the comforts of outdoor air condtioning and would have to sell my playmate to the highest bidder if you know what I mean...

 

Absolutely fantastic pictures of one of my favorite body styes. I had a '50 2 door sedan (2nd car) way back a long time ago. A quick difference (between '49-'50) is the chrome piece over the tail light. '49 sort of slopes downward, and isn't very tall. '50 is taller, and more straight out. Hard to describe, but next time you have several to view next to each other, you will see what I'm talking about. That '50 would haul proverbial A-- from a dead stop!

 

Those are absolutely beautiful cars as art in motion or even automotive ****.

442much, my friend just turned 80 years old. He has had a quad bypass, can't see worth a flip and litteraly could not drive the 50 model. He owned it for a number of years and it wound up in a storage warehouse and went down a little. We pulled it out a few years ago and brought it back up with new tires, cleaning the gas tank out and a set of twin Smitty's on it. I kept it at my house for about a year and did little odds and end on it and then detailed before I took it home. I live about 20 miles from my friend. When I took it home it was just cool enough I needed a jacket with the top down. I was crusing across the George Bush turnpike and had lots of people honking at me. I took my old friend for a short ride in it and it just didn't seem to do much for him. Really kind of sad. The car has never been titled in his name. I cranked it about 6 months ago but it has not been started since. The 54 was another story. I found it on ebay and we spent 7 years and lots of his money restoring it. He has never even riden in it. He had one of each of these cars new. The 54 is actually a nicer car and well documents history. It was ugly but a solid California car.

I meant to point out one quick way to tell a 49 from a 50 is the chrome on the front fender. Notice the coupe has the chrome on the front fender while the blue sedan does not. From some oldtimers I have talked with it was popular to put the trim on the 49 after the 50's came out.

 

The three red buttons is probably for a tri note musical horn...I was at the Olds show in 2005 and almost froze to death (in July) my daughters '68 convert was in the parade along with some of her friends kids as passengers

Never really got attached to that sport. I know, you either love it or hate it. For me, it would be like watching the Chess Channel. Have friends that just love playing it though.
