Q/Jet Question

I took the 69 to the quardajet guru. After he looked at it, he told me that is not the right carburetor for the car. It seems it's from an 86 or 84 , (can't remember which), Chevy. He reckoned the newer carbs aren't as good as the older ones. He also told me that it has been messed with, efforts made to increase the performance. Not totally sure what he meant by that. We will have to see what happens. Any thoughts on this. Thanks

Without knowing the carb number of your current carb, it's difficult to provide a useful comment. Mid-80s Chevy truck carbs have the same front inlet as do most Olds carbs.

Here's a listing of the correct 1968-1970 carb numbers.

Cliff Ruggles, the guy who literal wrote the book on quadrajets prefers the 1705 series carbs from the late 70 and early eighties with modified idle circuits and metering rods for performance builds. They later eighties computer controlled carbs are not ideal however. Depending on the number that carb may not be correct but it might work really well if tuned correctly. You can call Cliff and give him the carb number and your engine specs and he can recommend a tuning package for your application. He also sells quality parts and a good price.

I also have the one by Doug Roe:

They're both excellent resources.

A picture would help a lot. Did your guru give you a part number? It's not good to bolt on an emissions legal carb like a quadrajet without upgrading the fuel circuits.

I have been away. The carb number is 17084226, out of a Chevy truck by the looks of it.
