1966 442 air cleaner

Did any 66 442 come with an open element air cleaner? If so is this original or some aftermarket piece? It came on a car I bought, i put a tri carb set up on it so I don’t need this or the intake manifold etc.

Do you know if this is a factory correct breather? My car is an original 4 speed car.

Top, yes
Bottom, I think so,
Pie Plate, yes
red pie plate retainer, from a different car.

The red retainer is correct for that cleaner. Also correct for the 66/67 auto cleaners.

I've never seen one with it. Edit: I just saw a couple on google when looking over about 300 mid 60s 442 engines. Think I like the chromed one better.

Actually put hands on mine tonight, battery was too dead to fire the block. I should probably actually buy a battery for the car instead of giving it hand me downs.

I have owned several of these and the base is correct and is the same as the Chevelle one except the Chevy one has a tube to the intake. The air cleaner top has a chrome finish as shown but is not fully polished so has a different finish. Like the other chrome air cleaners in 66-67. IT is a manual trans version not just 4 speed. I have never had one with the red retainer. All have been chrome.

Nice original.

Here is a factory photo out of a factory sales brochure of a 66 442 engine. The retainer is red.

My experience has been mostly 66,so there could have been a change in 67 to the chrome retainer. I defer to the 67 guys on that one.

My Dad bought his 1967 442 with auto on the tree and it came with the 4-speed open element air filter setup from the factory.

My first 442 was an early build 67, Auto, with the air cleaner that Koda shows in his avatar. The top was larger diameter than the base so it was open all around underneath the top, good to hear those secondaries open....
