Body Data Plate VIN and Engine numbes assistance please

Hello All, Newbie Here,

I am looking at buying a '70 Cutlass Supreme Convertible that is in need of restoration. Gotta decide soon whether to buy or not.

Any assistance in deciphering the Body Data Plate, VIN and numbers from the top front on the engine block would be most appreciated. Things like color, interior, options, etc.

I have uploaded photos of each item.

If this is not the correct place to post this request, please advise.

Was advised this is a body data plate....thanks, Pat

The top picture is the body data plate, not a Protecto plate. Protecto plates were a plastic warrenty card. The engine pic shows a 68-76 olds 350 block

Here's the breakdown of your body data plate, aka trim tag.

ST 70 = style/model year = 1970

34267: 3 = GM division = Oldsmobile, 42 = model series = Cutlass Supreme, 67 = body type = convertible

E = assembly plant = Linden NJ

3893 BDY = Fisher body number, which has no relationship to the VIN

TR 990 = interior color and front seat type = black interior with a notch back bench seat

25 B PNT = lower body color (25 ) = astro blue, and convertible top color (B) = black

05C = time build code = May (05), third week of that month (C), 1970

No one knows what the two 2 markings on the type right side of the plate mean.

First off, that's not the Protect-o-Plate. The POP was a plastic card that was stored in the glove-box. That's a photo of what is called the body cowl tag or body plate, depending on who you ask.

Yours decodes as follows

70 = 1970 model year
3 = Oldsmobile
42 - Cutlass Supreme
67 = convertible
E = Linden, New Jersey assembly plant
3893 = body number at that plant, not decodable
TR 990 = black vinyl bench seat
Paint 25 = Astro Blue body color
Paint B = black convertible top
05C = 3rd week of May 1970 build date

Someone else will help with the engine casting number.

This is what a protect-o-plate looks like. It has the name of the original purchaser embossed on it. This one is for a Corvette.

Your VIN will read 342670E------. The first five numbers are the same as on your data plate. The "0" indicates the model year of your car - 1970. The "E" is the same as on your data plate. And the "------" are the six numbers that indicate the sequence number of your car as it passes through the assembly line.

Interesting that there is a large oil pressure sending unit. Does this car have Rallye Pack gauges? That would be an interesting special order option on an otherwise basic Supreme.

I merged your 2 threads, its confusing to have 2 conversations going on about the same subject. Good luck in your quest.

I've only seen this car once. I really don't know much yet about 1970 Cutlass yet. I restored several muscle car but it been over 20 years ago and they were either 1969 corvettes or camaros.

How would I know if it has the Rallye Pack Gauges?

I have a few pictures of the instrument panel but they are very dirty.

I'm probably gonna buy this car for my next project.

thanks,

Pat

Gauges instead of idiot lights for oil / water and a tachometer with the clock.

Here is the best photo I took when I went to see the car yesterday.

I believe that there is a tach with the clock on the right side. Cannot tell for sure if the one on the left has idiot lights or gauges for the oil/water from the photo.

Another question....photos I have seen of a 1970 442 convertible that is blue with white stripes and white convertible top also has white interior.

Are there any 442 convertibles that have black interior but is blue with white stripes and white top?
