70 Radio

I have a 70 W30. Radio is a AM,FM. Not working good so took it out, had a shop that said they work on old radios. After checking it out, they said it needed a complete overhall, and would cost $1000 to fix, so I brought it home. Been looking, for a new one. I thought all 70 were a 2 piece radio, mine is one, so I assumed it was a 71 or 72. Were all 70 two piece, or is it just a stereo? Mine has two fin type parts attached to it one on the side, and one is in the back. All the radios, I see on Ebay only have one on the back. I really thought mine was original radio, as car was nice and complete when I bought it 20 years ago, and radio was not working, but I got it to work somewhat, volume problem, so I thought, that if the radio had failed, it would have been replaced, and being this one was not working good, the owner just keep it as is? Any idea what radio I have?

I'm by far not an expert and only repeating what I have read. I believe the 2 piece radios you mention are from the bigger cars - 88's - 98's etc .. The Cutlass radio is a 1 piece unit. Good chance what you have is the original just as you thought.

The '70 a-body am-fm is two piece, head and amplifier. The 71-72 am-fm is one piece. The ***** are slightly different.

There were two radio options in 1970:
  • U63 Deluxe Pushbutton. This is a single-piece radio.
  • U68 AM-FM Stereo with rear speaker. This is a two-piece radio and the one you have in your car. The second piece is the stereo multiplexer unit.
I had my stereo radio fixed by Crockett Sound Lab in Alamo TN. It's a high-end shop that gives a 5-year guarantee. The Corvette people use him because he can fix any stock so it looks concours and passes the performance verification tests. The owner, Tony Mac, specializes in repair of Delco radios up to 1985. The basic repair cost for a 1970 stereo radio is $500 and includes cosmetic requirements. There will be small extra expense if it requires an output transistor.

Tony Mac is a bit eccentric but does great work. Expect to wait months for repair. He will tell you the time frame before you send in the radio.

I have a 1972 Cutlass AM-FM Stereo radio and it is a one-piece radio. I'm not sure if the 1971 is two-piece or one-piece.

The AM radio in my dad's (now my nephew's) '71 Cutlass Supreme convertible is a one-piece unit. I pulled it years ago and replaced it with cheap AM/FM/cassette unit about 30 years ago. I found the original when my parents were downsizing and gave it to my nephew. I hope he didn't toss it.

A '70 AM/FM model number # 03AFM1, two piece; # 03AFM2 (ICQD) two piece? Is there a paper sticker on your unit with a model number? A thousand is way too much for a rebuild. I had my '57 wonderbar repaired for $800 in Toronto, three years ago. It needed extensive work on the solenoids.

Corrected my in-correct post, meant to say the later was one piece.
