Not sure, but somebody (private) has paid for the domain up through 2022.

The site has been owned by Brothers Automotive for a number of years. The site was apparently re-hosted on GoDaddy last month. Don't know why it's still off-line, but frankly the 1990s-vintage forum software made it relatively worthless. Hopefully they are bringing the site screaming and kicking into the 21st century. In the meantime, the admittedly flawed Olds FAQ is still available at this mirror site.

I didn't know there was a mirror site. Very nice. When did that get set up?

Don't know. I started searching for an alternate FAQ site once 442.com went down. Found it shortly after that. Google is your friend.

If the URL is any indication, this mirror version resides here on classicoldsmobile.com. If so, then perhaps our admins might be able to provide the opportunity to correct some of the misinformation I see commented on once in a while?

If people are interested, I can set up similar style wiki type pages on my site if we want to start building a repository for documentation.

We did that here about five years ago or so. A number of people put effort into fixing the FAQ errors. Then the revised FAQ and all that work mysteriously disappeared.

I can give my guarantee that as long as my web host keeps the servers going, my site will stay up. Wouldn't be too difficult for me to add a "documentation" link to my menu and a page where a few mods can go in and edit.

Hosting

Since I liked this site and 442.com, and I love my convertible 442, if it helps, I would offer free hosting with my servers to the two sites.

I could do the same. We could make a database, and mirror in five places.

Even if 442.com comes back up, the site is shoddy, and the faq has errors and is clunky.

I thought the domain got sold to a Chinese firm or company. All numeric domain names (especially short ones) sell for a premium over there as they are easier to market.

The icann registration was recently updated, so someone is noodling about with it.

So as per Steve Kenny Brothers doesn't own the site. He still has all the content but doesn't have the URL.

He said "The newly revised and largely corrected Olds FAQ is available at Oldsfaq.com"

That's too bad. The domain owners should sell it off if they don't want to build a site. Sell it to someone who will restart the website, instead of letting the domain sit in limbo.

It is sad, but can you really blame the owner? For a 3 digit domain name, he was probably offered 6 (maybe 7) figures for the domain because of there incredible demand for these in Asian countries. It looks like a lot of content was transferred to Oldsfaq.com. I wish there was a little more communication but it is what it is. One could have easily bought something like 442faq.com for ~$8, transfer all the content, sell 442.com, buy any dream Oldsmobile and a garage to put it in and enjoy.

Just a lot of faulty and sometimes downright bad information. I called out something I knew was wrong and next thing I knew I was banned from the site.

It not really gone Johnny the name just changed... http://www.oldsfaq.com/oldsfaq.htm

It can be helpful but it can also be misleading. Its not the be all and end all of Oldsmobile facts. You must verify whatever you are relying on and or quoting from their pages. Joe P explained it to me recently. Someone lifted all that information from a site that was similar to this one or the like, organized it and presented it as facts.... As you know when somebody asks a question there can be multiple answers and everyone is not necessarily correct.... Apparently there was no deep proof checking, nonetheless whoever put those pages together did a helluva job IMHO....

They also tried to give credit to every contributor to the information provided which is why you will see Joe Padavano's name all over the place, among others. Problem is even when you see Joe Ps name you cant be sure he is sole contributor to that information. Or that he is tied to precisely the part you are interested in. In the end you must take it with a grain of salt.... Too bad because the layout is fantastic, navigating is easy, and its a fun browse.

Whether it is a mirror or not, I cannot say. The content of oldsjunction.classicoldsmobile.com is owned by LLC dba Internet Brands. Any content displayed on oldsjunction.classicoldsmobile.com is subject to all and any litigation arriving from information posted on oldsjunction.classicoldsmobile.com.

Just so we're all clear, the content in the Olds FAQ was extracted from posts made on the ancient Chubecto Oldsmobile listserver in the 1980s and early 90s. A member named David Brown took it upon himself to extract information from posts and compile it into the FAQ. There was no formal fact checking, which is why that FAQ is only slightly more accurate than the crap you read on Facebook today. Take it with a grain of salt, it is not an "official" document. The 442.com website changed hands some years ago, and the whole "copyright" thing is questionable given the origins of that information (and if someone thinks they own it, I'd like a check for all the parts of it that came from posts I wrote). There was an attempt here to create an Oldsmobile Wiki that corrected that info and allowed for Wikipedia-style fact checking and editing. Several of us put substantial time into creating it. It mysteriously disappeared at one point with no backups and was never restored. That puts a damper on one's interest in doing it again...

To be clear, the content listed at the website URL oldsjunction.classicoldsmobile.com is owned by LLC dba Internet Brands. How it got there, I cannot speak to; and, what was posted there I cannot speak to. There is absolutely nothing fuzzy about this (as Joe would state): oldsjunction is a "subdomain" of classicoldsmobile.com. Since LLC dba Internet Brands owns classicoldsmobile.com, LLC dba Internet Brands owns any content posted to oldsjunction.classicoldsmobile.com and LLC dba Internet Brands is responsible for all and any litigation arising from information posted to any subdomain of classicoldsmobile.com.

Oldsfaq.com (on the other hand) is an officially registered domain name with no ICANN DNS server namespace affiliated registration to classicoldsmobile.com. Oldsfaq.com is registered to "Steve".

I read through the history of the ancient Chubecto Oldsmobile listserver after I first joined CO and the historical posts you made regarding the listserver content. Oh my, the days of listservers - cumbersome, awkward, and very, very time-consuming - but it was about the only thing which worked at the time. It's a shame data was lost in attempts to migrate (accurate) data. Regarding ownership of data posted to any public forum, while there certainly exist several caveats, in general a user (generally) retains copyright to their original contributions.

From the US Copyright Office Circular 66:

Many websites also contain third-party content. This type of content typically belongs to the author of the content unless there is a valid written and signed transfer of ownership of all rights. One type of third-party content common to websites is user-generated content, the ownership of which may be transferred through terms of service. The Copyright Office will accept an application that asserts a claim in user-generated content as long as you identify the authors of that content and confirm that the copyright in that content has been transferred to the claimant named in the application. If the content was created by a large number of authors, the Office will accept an application that provides a representative number of author names and the number of additional authors who contributed to the content.

note: You must exclude any authorship that is not fully owned by you from your application. In particular, a claim in an entire website does not extend to externally linked content.

Have fun in the time machine here. I've searched older ads and other content from the site over the past couple years for the SX, V Code, U Code and other registries.

You can actually find much of the original Chubecto Oldsmobile listerv content on the Internet. If anyone has ever been a member of any listserv, no one would garnish any fun via that time machine. I was involved in many listserv memberships back in antiquity, all communications occurred via e-mail between other members of the listserv. It was awesome (so we thought) in it's day, and it was in fact. But there would be no joy whatsoever in revisiting that content - oh what a nightmare.
