The Governor's Olds

Turns out that Ralph Northam, the new Governor of VA, owns a restored 1953 Olds. He had it on display in front of the Governor's Mansion today for the swearing in. Cool.

It may pull left but it's even parked with wheels left.

Jabs aside, it is one beautiful car. Thanks for the picture Joe.

On a similiar note, in 1990 their was a city councilman from San Antonio (later mayor) that had a 67 442. We met on the way to Columbus for the nationals. I don't remember his name but he was very friendly. I loaned him a spirit item to use in his trunk for the show. Later he wrote me a letter (snail mail back then) thanking me for use of the item.

Based on the Sunday Times-Dispatch articles, Ralph Northam did a lot of the work on the 53 himself. I didn't vote for him (not so much against him as against his party, which could not care less about those of out here in the hinterlands) but Northam is cast from a little different mold than a lot of modern politicians. And at least the carpetbagger is gone- at least till we see him running for president.

I'm hoping Guvnah Northam will be old-car-friendly and keep this knucklehead state representative here on a leash. Danny Marshall R-14th House District seemed to love messing with the antique license statutes several years back. He said he introduced the legislation increasing antique car registration fees (and making it generally more onerous to use the plates) in response to law enforcement requests, to reduce the number of antique plates being used on beaters.

Trouble with that is, I have a family full of Virginia LEO's from SBI down to county deputy and all of them said they had more pressing issues than a misused antique car plate. When the dust settled and one looked at the financial projections from that 2007 legislation, it was apparent it was a money grab plain and simple. The projected revenue was over NINE MILLION dollars.

Hey, at least the left will call a tax what it is- a tax. This was touted as a fee. And I believe to this day it was done at request of some local government who wanted to tax antique licensed cars at full market or worse auction value, as they are now exempt from personal property taxes. Mr Marshall was on the House "Cities Counties and Towns" subcommittee at that time...

But a politician would never lie to us, right?

Having a car guy in the Governor's Mansion can't possibly hurt!

I wonder why we can't have a politics section here. Seems that, as a nation, about 1990 or so, we went from discussing issues and having mutual respect to a sort of faux-tolerance muteness that masked some serious differences in opinion. I think this is why politics is so nasty these days. I think the "no politics or religion" gag order here is part of the problem.

Because civility is dead today and any discussion of politics or religion will eventually devolve into profanity and name calling. There are plenty of forums where you can get that kind of abuse on the web. This site goes to great lengths to keep the discussion civil (and on topic). I think yesterday's comics pretty much said it all:

Joe, you are correct. I have seen a couple political comments on this site and just left them alone.
Civility, courtesy and respect have not vanished, just fewer people are practicing them. My two cents worth.

Both the Cuomos (Gov Andy & CNN Chris) are big car guys. Andy's disco Vette was displayed at the NY Auto Show a few years ago & Chris crashed his Firebird convertible in the Hamptons last summer, reportedly drag racing. If nothing else, he was driving like an idiot.
