1970 442 brake light in dash

my brake light in the gauges comes on when the ignition key is turned to on position and then stays on after the car is started. Is that a sign of a bad alternator or something else ?? Thanks. Greg.

Something else, most likely your ebrake pedal is not all the way up or switch is out of adjustment.. If thats not it, then pop the cap off your master cylinder and see if your low on fluid in the reservoir.

Stays on when emergency brake switch is disconnected, car has completely new brake lines and everything that goes with it. Has power brakes with new power booster and distribution valves also. Fluid is all full also.

Then the valve where the sensor is connected under the master cylinder has been actuated to one side or the other (probably when you bled the brakes) or you have a faulty sensor. Unplug the wire and the light will go out.

Will unplug that sensor tomorrow. I did just bleed the whole system since it is all new. If that valve is keeping the light on how do i reset the valve. Bleed the brakes again maybe ??

Do you have an ohm meter? See if the stud from the sensor is grounded or not. Do this with the wire unhooked. If grounded it is stuck or needs bled more, if not you have a different problem.

Will give that a shot. Brakes dont feel too good after first start up today. They probably need to be re bleed to get them right Thanks again

Disconnected the wire to the brake sensor on the frame and the light went out. The sensor is grounded now via the swich inside it. Guess I should bleed the brakes again to see if it goes back to the center position. The ebrake works just fine as the light comes on and off as the ebrake is pushed and released. Thanks. Greg
