I have a 68 442 I'm restoring and I can't figure out how to replace the retractible male belt covers. The male chrome clip is larger than the plastic housing opening and the housing is solid and doesn't give. I assume this is done to ensure the clip doesn't fall through locking up the mechanism. I have the new covers already and they are exactly to OEM specs (they sell these aftermarket) but short of removing/cutting off the stitching and resewing the chrome clip back on, I at a loss. I added a picture. Any ideas on how to get this cover off without cutting off the belt and resewing?

I've always taken the retractor apart to do this. If you know what you are doing, it's easy. If you don't...it's a nightmare!!!

My '68 also has the deluxe stainless seat belts & both my covers were cracked so I had to replace them. I carefully cut the stitching on the buckle tongue to get them apart. It seemed to be the easiest way to do it & it worked fine. Luckily I have a decent sewing machine that made quick work of it. I got some good strong black upholstery thread & needles. You'll have to have a sewing machine,there's allot of stitching in that small area!!!,including a zig-zag stitch at the end of the fold-over. I doubt you could push the needle through by hand, plus it wouldn't be safe.
