On a 1972 cutlass how do you remove those plastic covers

 

I would like to know also. Hopefully someone will reply and have some pics they can post.

 

They just snap off. BUT they are often brittle with age. I wouldn't even think about trying when they are cold.

 

I assume you are referring to the covers on the outer front seat belt retractors? If so, turn the unit upside down and you may be able to see 4 small tabs, 2 on each side. These tabs will have metal tabs sitting on top of them from the retractor which locks the plastic in place. If you squeeze the cover on the front and back ends which are the narrowest ends, as if you are trying to squeeze them twoard each other, you will baloon out the sides. This will usually give enough clearance for the plastic tabs to allow the metal retractor to pass out the bottom and thus release the plastic cover. Worst case you may need to get something in there to pry it out a little if you need a little more clearance. Remember, this is not about applying force but rather working carefully as you can break these plastic parts. Let us know how you make out. If pictires are needed let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Are you guys talking about the ones on the floor? If so, you just spread them at the base (at the carpet) and lift them up over the tabs on the retractor. You spread the long sides apart.
It's a little harder to get the plastic cover completely off the belt but you can usually wiggle the buckle through the opening in the cover. Sorry, I don't have any pics.

 

The "deluxe" belt covers have those same 4 tabs mentioned but also a black plastic dowel that goes through under the retractor at the bottom. That dowel is brittle and I broke mine (need another). It will be visible on the side lower center of the covers.

For these units, it may be easier to remove the whole retractor from the floor and take it apart on the bench. Less busted pieces and no holes in the seat covers when the screwdriver slips while prying...

 

how do you remove the electric wire from them?

 

i got it its a little tab that you push up

 

Now its out, carefully pry both sides of the cover off of the black dowel using your fingers.
The retractors may need disassy and lubing. I did not have to do all that, so do not know the details. If you do take apart, be careful on the spring at the end. It is possible you might have to give it one more "wind" to give more tension. Wear safety glasses incase you let go and it SPRINGS all over the place...

Is there any way to tell from the assembled one (without disassembling it)?
Since they were not meant to be repaired, there is nothing in the service manuals...

 

so lucky after cutting my fingers and several try's i finally fix it, my fingers are sore from holding all the tension in the spring and trying to rewind it back

However, glad to hear it is back together now, and working.
I just keep in mind that "blood, sweat, and gears" has a true meaning in this hobby.
