Hello-in the process of restoring 68 442 convertible. I purchased a manual driveshaft at a swap meet years ago. Getting to that installation point, and the driveshaft that I purchased appears to be two pieces. Not referring to the Trans yoke, but the drive shaft itself has a sleeve at the end that attaches to the differential. It appears that it would slide in and out, but I cannot get it to move. Does anyone know if they actually made an adjustable driveshaft?

 

ive never seen an adjustable driveshaft. what I think your seeing is the smaller diameter tube is mounted in rubber to absorb the shock from the trans,




the solid shaft was used on stick shift cars,presumably for strength, as a hard launch would probably tear the shaft from the rubber

 

As explained above its a 2 piece drive shaft, not a good match for a standard trans. These as they age tend to come apart.

 

Technically, it is not a "two piece driveshaft" (at least, not unless the rubber has disbonded). A two piece driveshaft has three u-joints, like the ones in my truck and my 62 F-85. The AT driveshafts are one piece, just internally damped with rubber.

 

I know first hand what a nasty shifting Automatic will do to this "two piece" stock 68 shaft. A stick car will do the same.
Do yourself a favor and have Dennys make you a new steel or aluminum shaft. Far Superior to anything stock. I just installed an aluminum shaft. Very nice piece.

 

Another vote for Denny's. He made me a perfect fit MMC shaft--light, strong, fast delivery.

 

I had a driveshaft made locally for my Cutlass. It wasn't very expensive.
