Hello Folks,


Can somebody tell me where the heck the dipstick is for the Power Steering fluid on a 72 Cutlass. I need to add some fluid. I looked all over for this thing.

 

It's on top of the power steering pump. Twist counter-clockwise.

 

It's an integral part of the pump cap...

 

Yes, look at the thing sticking down from the cap at the upper right in this diagram. That's the dipstick.

 

I assume the car does indeed have power steering.

 

How do you know that you need to add fluid if you can't find the dipstick?

I wondered this myself, but aren't there other symptoms of low fluid, like noise when the steering wheel is turned or perhaps a noticeable loss of power assist? Also, if one noticed a puddle of something under the car about where the pump is, one might want to check the fluid level in the pump to see if the puddle really is power steering fluid.

It looks like power steering fluid...
It smells like power steering fluid...
It tastes like power steering fluid...
... I wonder where the power steering fluid dipstick is, so I can tell whether I need to add some."
