Can someone tell me if 70-72 Cutlass, Center Console were different sizes in Length ??? Also, looking for the correct length on the Shift Cable for a 1972 Cutlass, 455, Dual Gate Shifter. I have been told the cable is 26-3/4' from center of eyelet to center of eyelet. I have also been told that the overall length is
30-1/2" ???

 

All 1970-72 consoles are exactly the same except for the woodgrain pattern. The cables differ between standard shifter and dual gate.

 

Thanks Joe, I assume the Dual Gate shifter would be a longer cable than the Standard cable.

 

I don't see how it would be different. It has the same attach points.

 

Well, according to the Supercars Unlimited website (one of the few vendor catalogs that typically has correct information), the regular cable is 29 15/16" and the Dual Gate cable is 25 3/4".

 

Go figure. I couldn't find that cable listed anywhere in the GM Parts Manual. Do you know what code it's for?

No. I know it was RPO W26, I was looking for the descriptor in the parts manual application. Check your parts manual under group 4.342

 

Depends upon what you mean by "the same attach points". Yes, the cable attaches to the shifter and the transmission selector ear, but both the shifter and ear are different for the Dual Gate. This different geometry apparently translates to a different throw length for the shifters, which necessitates a different length cable.

I think they have the wrong information. There is no way that dual gate is only 25 3/4". Mine is 30 1/2" long.


On my friends 71 cutlass, the standard shifter cable measured 27", I'm 99% sure it was a original cable.

 

The Original Dual gate cable is 29.7 inches eye to eye and 30 inches over all. This was measured from an NOS cable and matched a used original perfectly.

 

The standard cable is shorter.

When I swapped from a standard to a dual gate I compared the cables to understand why it needed to be changed and it all has to do with the hard mounting point for the cable on the shifter body. The dual gate mounting point is farther from the cable attachment point on the shifter arm that the one on the standard shifter.

 

So has anyone came up with the correct cable? I need one for my 71 Dual gate Ive heard 30 1/2" but then opgi changed it to 29 3/4" when I put make and model. Every website or seller has something diffrent.. Thanks Kevin

 

The overall length of the cable is not as important as the length of the cable that protrudes from the shifter end of the sheath. Yes the cable needs to be long enough so as not to bind, but the exposed length is somewhat critical. That is what the major difference is between the standard cable and the dual gate cable.

Inline tube has the correct replacement for dual gate shifters even has the insulator on it like the factory part of 406266 and it is a fraction of the price of an NOS cable
