Stupid question: why would an M22 car have a different boot than an m21 or 20 equipped car?

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask!
Maybe Sammy doesn't know and he wants to learn!

I am trying to determine if the boot is original, or if it is available aftermarket...if indeed u are referring to my question as being stupid, I will simply ignore your comment. But if u are asking a genuine guestion about the 3 different transmissions and their shifter boots, I will reply I do not know. I am hoping it is the latter.....

Shifter boots are the same whether it a M20-21 or -22.
Now the boot will probably be different whether the car had a console or not.
The original boot MAY have a GM part number molded into the piece

No, no, that was a followup to fleming's question, which was prefaced with the warning that it may be a stupid question. Not a remark about your original inquiry.

If the only stupid question is the unasked one.... I have MANY stupid unasked questions. :-)

I can't say if the boot is original or not, but it appears to be a floor shift sans console application. At first I thought it was the boot on the bellhouse, which looked really weird.

I agree with the analysis above that the boot would not differ due to M20/21/22 use, but perhaps for other reasons- console vs no-console chief among them.

All of that being said, "A find? M22?.......ummmmmmm " is, at the very least, not a SMART question.
