M22 / 350

Got a 71 coming to me. The seller says M22 behind a 350, with documentation from the Oldsmobile historical society. Everything I find online says that this combo would not exist. Any thoughts or info..Thanks.

Well I might be half cocked on the name, I thought that was what he said. The papers will be in my hands soon. He said the building and records have since burned down.

Transmission options

I'm not an expert, just sharing my thoughts. I agree with you that it seems like the 350 engine wouldn't have had a M22 behind it. In 1971 the vin was stamped in the automatic transmissions, I think it was in the manual transmissions too but am not sure, it seems like it would have been. I've also heard people say the guts can be swapped over to make a M21 an M22. But the only way you'll know for sure is once you get the car look inside the transmission and see what kind of gears it has in it. You might also look around for a build sheet, if your lucky enough to find one it should have a code saying what kind of transmission came in the car from the factory. In my opinion the bottom line is that 4 speed cars are fun to drive, and if you didn't pay too much for the purchase price it would be OK with whatever is in it.

Thanks 2blu442, seems like you got a 4spd or more (quite a drool list of cars). I am also looking at putting a gear vendors behind it, one clutchless shift and overdrive..Thanks again

Correct. There will be a VIN derivative on the trans. It must match the one on the engine if the two were born together (and assuming nothing has been restamped). The first character of the VIN derivative must match the first character of the car's VIN, and the last eight of each must also match for the parts to have been originally installed in that car.

Thank you Joe for the good info. It was the Oldsmobile history center in Lansing not the Oldsmobile Historical Society as I had mentioned in an eariler post.
