World's only '68 Convert with 3677 VIN/body tag
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oldsmobile-C...US_Cars_Trucks
It sounds like they took the VIN tag and body plate off the real 442 which was not a convertible and made a Cutlass convertible into a "442" with the wrong body style listed on the VIN.
VIN is listed as "33677E150370"
they may have gotten a LITTLE carried away with the ol' "factory pen scratchin' marks"
.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Convertible
Complete correct 442 drivetrain, 400cid with correct coded C heads, OG coded Transmission, etc...
( This is a rust free car. original sheetmetal and floors )
When the restoration was done. They had 2 1968 Cutlass's a 442 hardtop that was in need of rust repair. And a super clean Loaded Cutlass S convertible. So they transferred the complete 442 driveline into the loaded Convertible

Well, your way would be illegal. It sounds to me like they just put all the 442 equipment from the legit 442 hardtop onto the 'S' convertible. Which is fine until the next owner tries to pass it off as a 442, hoping that nobody bothers to look at the VIN.

Read the original post again. The car is a CONVERTIBLE with a Sport Coupe VIN. Someone swapped VINs or at least complete cowls.

In any case, looking at the photos, there's a 5.0 Mustang air cleaner base, the wrong master cylinder, an aftermarket intake, etc, etc. The car sure looks like it's been fabricated from a bunch of parts.

If the seller had just left the original tags on the car, and said that it was built to be what he wanted, then there would be no problem. Once you swap VIN's, you open yourself to all sorts of violations of both state and federal laws. This is why all the auction houses are so careful not to accept cars that have a tainted pedigree. You can change everything on the car except for the VIN, and not get into hot water. Now, this car is forever tainted, and the only possible salvation is if it can be proven to be legitimate with its original paperwork, and a state issued VIN. It would take an experienced LEO about 10 - 15 minutes to find the true VIN, unless it was deliberately destroyed, in which case, there would be even greater consequences for the person that did this.

Which bothered me, because a convertible would have to be
336_67_E blah blah blah
SIXTY SEVEN body type.
Indeed, why not put the 442 VIN tag if messing up that bad?
That air cleaner got me- lid covers just the filter. WTH is the point in having ANY snouts or indeed any of the lower housing outside the filter?
Durrrrrrr.

So, being the pot stirrer that I am, I had to contact them:
They replied:
I actually believe him, although "inverted" numbers don't really explain the problem............
So I have to ask......
Was the VIN just a typo or was the VIN swapped? I hate to see someone put that much effort into restoring the car and put a hardtop VIN on a convertible. I so it's too bad because stuff like this happens all the time to save cars and it's not like a 68 Cutlass convertible is a particularily rare car.
Thanks,
Mike

Anything is possible when dealing with the dmv. I purchased a 1966 pontiac lemans convet. Title was missing 2 digits. I had him write me a bill of sale. It was a tiny bit of hassle. I made one phone call and stopped by the OHP to verify vin number was not messed with. Turns out. The car was mis titled in 1968 when the original owner sold the car. Took them a few weeks to find it as the had to go thru microfiche to find it. One letter from kansas and one more trip to the tag agency and I was the second (lol) owner of the car. But AANYONE that put $40k into a car would have done this before the build not leave it up to someone else.
