Work Bench Blues

Don't let this happen to you. I went to find a simple part, a gas pedal for my 65. It took me so long to find under all the debris, thanks to my piggish ways. Whatever you do, stay clean or it will cost you dearly !!

What makes me mad is I spend all day straightening my stuff out when it starts looking like this. I only need to return and work for an hour and it looks like this all over again.

Exactly !! No matter how well I clean, it reverts back to it's default state....filth and mayhem. I've pretty well given up. The sad thing was, I didn't even find the part in that mess. After about twenty minutes I gave up and then found it in a bucket in the lean-to.

Talking You're in good company

Don't worry about it. Mine's similar also. The good news is that we're in good company. See the photos.

I can't find anything if I do clean it up. Leave it like it is and I know where every thing is. If I clean up and throw something away I can be sure I will need it within 7 days after the garbage pickup.

Uhhh, maybe I missed something. Where's the workbench???

At the risk of offending, that bench really needs a good organizing. It makes working on projects much easier when you know exactly where things are and have a large enough work area to use.

Ok, that being said - it's your workbench so do with it what you think is right.

Ha! Same here. It takes longer to clean up than it does to repair the car so I just throw them in a heap on my bench.

That's how you can tell a workbench is getting lots of use.

Looks like my bench when I've let friends use my garage. They get pissed when I tell them they can't use it again....

Do you lose the parts you're looking for, or do you have another workshop for them?

I lose parts all the time. "It's here SOMEWHERE" is my most common thought as I wrestle my way through the heaps of crap me and my father store in there.

Work bench or bar? Works either way for me.

Good thread. I was bored early
this morning and took a few shots
of mine.

It doubles as a bar when things are
slow in the project dept.

It's the attic area that is a freaking mess!

This is my theory also.
Plus the wife says it is so messy she doesn't like to go in there.

Looks like mine after about a hour of work. I clean it just to destroy it again. Drives me nuts looking for the socket I just put down two seconds ago only to find out it's in my back pocket after tearing through everything again.

Looks like a nice comfortable work area. My whole shop is only 12 x 8 feet, and I have to share one end of the bench with my wife for her gardening things. End up with garlic bulbs and dirt all over my greasy car parts.
I was allowed to build right on the property line if the shop was under 100 square feet, so it came in at 96. Pretty cramped, though.

Hi Stan,
My pedal fits quite snuggly on those pivot posts. Either your rubber is worn down or the ***** rusted smaller. I suspect the former. Actually, I've had ones where the rubber hardened and ripped. You may need a replacement pedal.
I've got a second set of posts in decent shape if you need them. Think I left them on the bench somewhere, though...

Mine looks good right now. I just spent last weekend cleaning it, so I would have room to start messing it up this weekend.

Yep me too! Sometimes I end up,going to buy a new part because it is easier to than finding the one lost under all that crap

That's exactly right ! It gets even better. I started putting screws in the wall to hang packages so I can find them easier. Now I find packages of marrettas over packs of vacuum line plugs, etc. Easier, I've found, to just hang stuff on existing nails and screws, but now I'm losing the things underneath.
I think I need to go on a special program or something.

Here's a pic of the clean end of the bench. Look familiar?

Actually no. I fixed that problem a couple years ago with some transmission fluid that accidentally spilled all over that kind of stuff

I couldn't overcome my messy tendencies so my resolution was to build a narrow bench that wasn't big enough to pile stuff on.

Now everything is piled up next to the 442 where my wife used to park her truck...
