Wiring help needed, PLEASE
Wiring help needed, PLEASE
I got help earlier and I need more.
The wiring diagram show the purple goes to the "S" on the starter and the yellow goes from the "R" to the + on the coil.
Problem, I have a HEI. My mechanic buddy, who is good but not an Olds guy said not to do that.
I need to know 2 things.
What wire goes to the + on the distributor? Or what comes off the "R" on the starter.
I need to know what wires go to the solenoid on the firewall.
Ok 3.
There is a big wire coming off the solenoid on the fire wall that I don't remember where is goes. I am so pissed I did not mark things better. I know I screwed up. I just need a little help with a couple of wires, please and thank you.

The purple goes to the S terminal, with an HEI you may or may not need the yellow wire that will run from the R terminal to the Batt+ terminal on the HEI cap, This wire provides 12v when the key is selected to start and the starter solenoid engages. This signal is removed in the run position.

Like I stated above, if the distributor does not receive 12v during start the yellow wire is needed

You need a 12v source that turns on and off with the ignition key in the run and start position to supply the HEI at the Batt+ terminal on the cap to operate.
I need to know what wires go to the solenoid on the firewall.
What solenoid on the firewall, there is none in the stock wiring.
Ok 3.

Again, what solenoid? Are you referring to the terminal block attached to the horn relay?

Try to keep these things simple.
That yellow wire...just keep it unhooked and tuck it away some where. You don't need it. (points only)
The Hei needs just one wire. Find a source that is HOT when the key is ON and and in RUN position. Both selections of the key, or it wont work .
As you know, that purple wire goes to the S termainal on the starter...you must have that or it don't work.
That solenoid you speak of on the fire wall, Do you mean relay? Is this a 1972? or what.
Tell us what your working on.

I might not be naming things correctly. There is one that is on the firewall just about the brakes. 2 wires are in a black clip, one is in a single clip, don't know about the 4th wire.
On the drivers well wheel, there one that goes to the battery, has several wires to it and one which looks like it has a inline fuse, but no way to get to it, where does that one go.
Not sure if my images uploaded.
69 olds cutlass supreme with a 350 engine and a 350 turbo, if that helps.

That yellow wire we talked about, it used to go to the R terminal. Again, you dont need it with HEI.
Thanks for telling us you have a 69. I don't have 69info available to me, but I'm looking..
That relay you have laying on the A arm...it should be attached to the fender. It probably needs that NOW for a ground, its important.

Sully, do you have access to the 1969 chassis service manual? CSM...
You need the wiring diagram in that manual. GET ONE.
I could spout off the 71 figures, but they might not be right for you.

As noted, the HEI needs +12V in both START and RUN positions. The yellow wire from the R terminal provides the +12V in START. The other wire to the coil is a resistor wire that only provides about +9V in RUN. You need to replace the resistor wire with a regular piece of copper wire, then connect BOTH this new wire and the yellow wire to your HEI BATT terminal. Problem solved.
