Window crank failure 😡

My car came with nice fitting window cranks but the guy put ugly ***** on them. I saw how cheap the cranks were selling for so I ordered 4 of them . Out of 4 1 fit ok, but the other 3 were sloppy loose. I exchanged them and the 3 that I exchanged were sloppy as well. Now I am wondering if they are just junky . It appears the hole for the spline just isn't deep enough. I'm at wits end. The ones I pulled off were pretty scratched up. What have you guys been doing for window cranks.

Where do you get them from? I've used good mark , Dorman and oer without any luck. My next stop is gonna be eBay.

Dorman used to sell replacement GM **** kits. I used them many years ago and they work great. They used to come in colors of black, clear, and white.

Yeah, after doing some research my experience is pretty much the norm with those window cranks. You would think after all this time they would make some effort to fix the problem.

You could give Ames Performance Engineering a call (Pontiac repro parts). They show a more expensive repro window crank (PN F184KD - $15 ea.) that they claim is more correct in terms of fitment, spline size, etc. I've talked with them before on these but have not yet tried them out. They maintain fairly good "notes" on their computer system that the sales people can access and during a conversation with them awhile back (I had specifically called them about these window cranks) they referred to their computer system notes......said they had sold MANY of these and were not getting any negative feedback on them.

Sure, I realize many vendors use the line "That's the first we've ever heard of that problem" or something to that effect when you contact them to ask about a problem with a part BUT Ames has a fairly good rep when it comes to providing good descriptions on their repro parts.

They also sell cheaper versions so it's not like the PN F184KD is the usual repro window crank that they've just jacked the price up on in an effort to convince you it's "better".

Does your car have reproduction door panels on it? If so, whose panels?

OK - figured I would ask......Legendary's panels seem to be a bit thicker (ie - the panel board is thicker/stiffer compared to originals) which can exacerbate the problem with shorter splines on the repro cranks.

No springs were installed . The originals were fine as far as fit.

I got new cranks with the new interior I ordered from Legendary. I had no problems at all, seem just fine though I didn't know of any problems to look for. I will check them again.

I ordered a set of window cranks from Fusick last year and they fit like crap. I used the better ones for the front and the other two in the back. It's hard to find ones that fit properly. My original ones were old and discolored I wished I would have kept them because they at least functioned properly.

I got them at Summit and they were fine with the exchanges. Don't fault them.
