Who was asking me about an 890 open faced alternator?

Hi All
A while back I was sharing pictures of this alternator to help someone recognize one. At that time one of the members here told me they needed this alternator, but I was saving it hoping to purchase a W30 I knew about. After pursuing that car for 15 years the owner offered to sell it to me, but the years have not been kind to it. Now it needs a lot of sheet metal replaced, and his price is more than I could afford. So... that said, I'm now considering selling this alternator. But I'd like to give the person who contacted me first shot at it. I don't remember who it was and I can't find the thread. If your out there and still need this piece please contact me. Sorry my memory isn't very good anymore! John

Happy New Year John, I know we've talked about other items in the past, I don't think the '890 ever came up. But if no one else comes forward I would be interested in this.

Good morning Brett, thank you for your interest. I've had some PM's expressing interest in it too. But I know there was someone who said it had the right date code for his project car, so I think I'll give it a week or so to see if he speaks up. I got it on a Toronado parts car about 12 years ago, clearly not factory. But you never know what you'll find on a car that's been kicking around for decades.

It was me John.....you were going to send that in trade for the woodgrain insert....I'm still waiting for it to show up.

Besides, it needs to be restored and I've restored quite a few of those.

Just kidding on the "It was me" part......I only need one of those 1100890's and already have one.

Those are cool looking when installed.

Sounds good John, I have been aquiring the missing pieces for my 70 for a long time. It's not even close to needing an alternator now, but finding those are just so easy.

Here's a pic/description I just took showing one difference on the back halves - '69 VS '70.

It appears the alt John shows has a '69 back half.....BUT.....who's to say that the earlier production 1100880 and 1100890's DIDN'T come with the " '69 style" back halves????

It makes sense - no date codes, etc were going to be stamped into the BACK HALVES and why let a bunch of "leftover" '69 style back halves go to waste?? Front halves are all the same - '69 vs. '70 -both have 6 spokes and were blank until they decided what "build" [37 amp or 55 amp] they were getting and then they stamped the numbers in them accordingly.

You could also equate this to the "flat ridge VS. bumped ridge" front fender situation......plenty of '71 Cutlass's/442s received FLAT RIDGE front fenders as they apparently used up "leftover" 1970 fender inventory at the plants.

Sorry to divert John's thread off into a discussion of features/look of '69/70 alts but it's hard to resist when these cool pieces come up for discussion.

Thank you for sharing Patton. Anything that helps our brethren restore their cars in a good thing! I hadn't been aware of the difference in back halves, but agree it makes sense that an early build could have had leftover parts. I did see a post describing a date stamp near the plug in. This one has something there but I've not tried to clean it up but do see the ink stamp. If that was factory, then it would support the idea that this alternator is as came from the factory. John

FWIW - the original 1100890 open face alt for my '70 W30 shows a 9L5 date code on the front half. Build date on the broadcast card is Nov 21, 1969. The back half is as appears on the Left in my pic above...."large boss" at the approx 3:00 position.

Be aware that the letter "I" was not used....they skipped that letter since it could be mistaken for a "1". So the 9th month of the year, September, would be indicated with a "J" instead of "I".

September = J (instead of "I" which is skipped)
October = K
November = L
December = M

My bet is they used up the so-called "leftover" '69 back halves as they transitioned into stamping alts for the '70 cars (1100880 and 1100890).

Thank you to all who contacted me and expressed interest in this part. The person I'd communicated with a few years ago contacted me. That person decided to pass on it, the next person I contacted said they'd take it. I wish I had access to more of these, but am glad this one will help a member bring their car closer to correct numbers.
