whats a petcock????

So after firing up the car and doing its first oil change,I added some marvels mystery oil a couple gallons of anti freeze..... the petcock let go,I checked my spare radiator and that one was junk to. I call auto zone and say im looking for a petcock and I get silence so I respond with you know the "radiator drain thingy" and I hear oh why didn't you just say that I've never heard of that other thing , whats this world coming too when the parts places don't even know the correct names to parts........

Yesterday I went to buy a 1/2" stud at Home Depot. The guy in hardware had never heard the term. Oh, how I miss the local hardware in Hampton Twp, PA. They had it all, in a small, small place. And the people there knew their stuff.

I asked for a drain **** at Auto Zone. The guy asked "straight or right angle?" then led me right to them.

They make good pets, but they get irritated of you play with them too much.

Only one older guy knew what I was looking for when I said it,at the store. They were all younger guys I guess when you run your car on rice, you dont need to drain the radiator.... lol

Haha. Even I know what a radiator petcock is (I'm an elderly gal). Years ago I asked a parts store for brake pads for my '73 caddy...got asked if it was 2 or 4 wheel drive. Geeze!

It's like this everywhere we go these days; parts store, home store, hardware store. These kids are just there for a minimum wage paycheck. They get hardly any, IF any, training. It's all about the bottom line....it's just short sighted on the corporations' part. My wife has been in retail for for over 30 years and every day it seems the company wants them to give better customer service with fewer employees and fewer hours [for those employees]. A typical annual raise for a good employee is 25 cents an hour. It's just sad, really.

Oh so true!!! My wife had worked for the Orange guys, pay your full time workers 22k-25k and expect them to live on that, while the upper management makes the big bucks and corporate levels make hundreds of thousands to millions. It's all about the numbers and could care less about their employees, hell they care so much about their profits, they took away all employee discounts. Plain and simple POS company!!!

I was at Advance Auto Parts and the kid did not know what an idler arm was. He ask the guy next to him and he said there must be another name for it because he did not know either. I walked out and went to Car Quest.

I have an old (never used) tool designed specifically to remove that pesky, stubborn petcock. I've never seen another. Really. True story. Anyone else have such a tool or ever seen one?

Went to NAPA about 15 years ago and asked for a carb rebuild kit for a Valiant. You guessed it, I got, who makes that?

No. It is about 6" long and kinda folds up into a box. I think (it's old) it is a yellow box if I remember correctly.

I went to auto zone and asked for a mid 1980's gm truck alt. ( I was going to a 1 wire set up ) . The idiot asked me what year. I told him look up a gm k20 chevy truck 1984. He then ask's me he needs the make and model of car its going into. I humored him and told him it was for a 1972 cutlass. I then told him just go ahead and get me the damn alternator for a 1984 k20. I went to my car and grabbed my alt from my cutlass while he got it and put it on the counter. He then tells me its not going to work I explain to him its the same damn case blah blah blah I explained to him how and why it would work. He then tells me I doubt it. So I went back the next day with the cutlass and said I guess it's not working huh. I enjoyed going to that autozone because Universal technical institute was in my home town and they would get jobs at the parts stores but didn't know the crack in their *** from a crack in the floor so I always like to go in there and mess with them lol. My local napa has also gone down hill. My last good auto parts store is car quest and the lady there knows her parts very well ( no pun intended ) .

Several years ago I went into AutoZone and asked for front and rear bearings and a brush set for an alternator on a 94 Suburban. Talk about feeling like I was in outer space. I have rebuilt a lot of them over the years and remember doing one on a 65 Gran Prix on the side of the highway. Not anymore. NAPA might have those parts. And yes, I am certainly old enough to know what a petcock is.

On a crowded day, yes you can hear crickets behind a parts counter. I like the Deer blank headlights in the eyes stare.
