I have this great photo of my Dad in the NH White Mountains sometime in the mid to late fifties. Not sure of the make and year of the car he was driving that day. Two tone, suicide doors and bulbous body.
Any guesses??
It's a '50! The '49's had separate letters across the bottom of the hood that spelled MERCURY,and in '50 they changed to a chrome strip with MERCURY indented in the chrome strip. Larry
So 50 Merc is the final answer! Thanks for the help, I had rough idea but wasn't sure. I remember him telling me about all the cars that he had when I was a little kid, he got up to about 40 before he gave up, don't remember him talking about the Mercury though.
I believe the parking lights were different on the 49 and 50 but I don't remember which is which. My folks had a 51 with the suicide doors like this one has.
Redoldsman, you are correct, the forty nine parking lights were small round lights that stood alone, and in '50 they had a larger chrome housing behind them. Larry
Dennis you need to come to the Nottingham cruise nights on Tuesday nights at Liars Paradise next summer and say hello. Need more Oldsmobiles to show up!
Unlike some older model cars, the "suicide doors on '49-51 Mercury's and Lincoln's were only the back doors on 4 door cars. Also, these cars were often nosed, decked, door handles shaved , and top's chopped,so then you didn't notice the rear doors opening from the front.Just trying to clear up this"Fading Memory thing " which ,people of my age had rather not talk about. Larry
Thanks Redoldsman ,you are correct the Fords of the early '40s did have them, but '49-'51 Fords did not have suicide doors only Lincoln and Mercury kept them through '49-'51! Larry
