What are your thoughts of buying a car with no title?

i found 2 70 cutlasses that will be parts cars. the guy said he has no titles for them but was willing to let me have the police run a vin check on them and would give me a bill of sail. i got one a year ago like this but did not like doing it. just wanted your thoughts on it.

Nothing wrong with it. It's kind of common. These cars have been sitting for years and the owners don't want to pay taxes on them so they sell them without a title. I don't know how it works in other states the owner only has to pay for the last 5 years of taxes if the title has been archived. If you want a title from the owner.

No worries , I did it alot.

I would do a vin check if you think you may want to title them in the future.

FYI
If you plan on stripping them and sending the shell to the scrap or wrecking yard...here in NW Indiana, the yards will not accept them without titles.

Yes, it might be wise to do a little research before dragging them home. The local scrap yards won't take a shell without a title. But I know a towing yard that will take it and hold it for 30 days, then they get a salvage title to dispose of it. If you had something good enough to restore they can even get a title for that. But I suspect it can be different from state to state. It's a great way to get parts you need, and trade stock that others need. Just be sure you have a way to dispose of the carcass once done. I have purchased several cars without titles over the years. For many reasons a car can be abandoned in the weed and the title lost. So I wouldn't be afraid to do it, just have a plan before getting them. John

A sawsall with a 10" blade makes the shell into a pile of scrape in less than 30 min

i just looked at these cars. one is a 70 convertible and shot. it does have disc brakes and a good frame. the other is a 72 supreme with many power options, buckets and nice console. they would both be parts cars because there is not enough good on them. i can get them for $2000, i think i will get them. he also has a 65 F85 with buckets and console, and factory console tach. i can get it for $800. i am not interested in the 65 but what are the buckets and console worth? that is all that is good on it.

A 70 convertible frame and disc brakes all cleaned up should get you what you are paying for both of the cars. I have a list of things that I will buy from you and PS (I will buy the console ), Remember that I was the 1st to ask , LOL

Exclamation Junk Car No Title

Hey, I just did this very same thing about a month ago here in Kentucky. I bought a'67 Cutlass hardtop and stripped it out. It had been sitting for a number of years out in the field just rotting away. When I bought it the owner gave me the title, which I am glad he did. I was going to sell the title and vin plate on evilbay. I am glad I did not. When I called the scrap yard to haul away the car I was told I had to have a title for him to haul away. Needless to say he got car and title. I would definitely check the laws in your state pertaining to disposal of junk cars. It very well may be worth a phone call. Bill

That = prison time if a prosecutor wanted to push the issue. Selling a trim tag is one thing but a vin plate can get you in deep dodo.

I have done a few with out titles. I take what I need and if the body is not woth saving, I cut them up and sell the scape metal. Not a whole lot of money but an easy way to get rid of the stuff.

I would be interested in some of the power stuff in the doors and trunk, should it ever be available.

If you strip them and sell the usable stuff and there is enough rust, disposing of the carasses should not be too difficult.
