What do you guys think? Bare metal (non painted center) SS1's?
Had these old SS1's sitting for a few years. Decided to do something different with them by going bare metal on the centers. After removing all the black paint from the centers I found that the goldish copper flashing was showing around the lugnut holes so I sprayed them with some rustoleum chrome. I have a 65 442 & since the SS1's aren't original to the car anyway I figured what the heck. Should have pics of them mounted on the car later today. Any
thoughts?
Well, I'm not completely sold on them. Personally I think they would of looked better with black between the spokes like the originals. In person the unpainted SS1's kinda make my 442 look like a goat because they do have a slight resemblance to the Poncho Rally II's... imo. In the pics they kinda look like Cragar SS wheels. I'm still not sold. Took some in the shade & sun to give you a better idea of what they look like
An interesting idea would be to body color the painted area, sort of an SSIII look to an SSI. Might not work on a white car, but maybe a red or a blue?

Funny cause I thought about doing something similar to an "Olds Gold" between spokes instead of the black or bare metal look. I have a chrome set of 15x7 442 SSIII's with gold on spokes that look pretty cool but I think it would definitely have to be the right kind of gold to pull it off on an SS1... a dull gold not being too bright or too flashy.
I like them, but as you say maybe a little too much Cragar SS.
Beautiful car by the way, I love white 65:s!
Thank you. I just got her on the road 2 weeks ago after sitting in my garage for close to a year. She sat in storage for a few decades before I bought her. I still have some mechanical work to do but it's better motivation for me to work on a running driving project.
