What am I missing here?

What am I missing here?
Sorry, but this is just stupid money. It also has to be a record auction price for an Oldsmobile-powered production car. (And before you post that the F88 sold for $3.4M, go back and read the part I wrote about PRODUCTION car)

Let's see. It has 14 miles and has been repainted. Really. With 185 HP it was a strong performer of it time. Sadley that may be true. It was not a movie car or ever owned by Burt Reynolds. You nailed it with stupid money. The money some of these cars (actually many of these cars) are bringing is insane. I think many of these folks like this buyer are going to take some big hits.

This is the best part of the write-up:
"As the gavel fell at a selling price of $440K, even the screaming chicken on the hood gasped."

Ya know, when you think you've seen everything.......smile and don't utter a sound. This is NOT likely to be last such example of "Stupid money". There will be something that pops up to make you forget all about this one.

not even a worry, people that buy these cars at this level this is chum change to them.. it's like buying a car for $100 to them. doesn't matter what it can be sold for later.. it's to say I own this and impress their rich friends... that's all...

You guys would be doing backflips if it were a W-31.
As mentioned, I don't see an oil fill tube, and the valve covers look Pontiac.
Serious question: did BOP engines get Corporate Blue, or is that a Chevy thing? I thought they were black.

Sure does, oil fill on the valve cover is a dead give away. From Wiki for the '77 Firebirds:
The shakers had a "6.6 Litre" decal for all L78 Pontiac 400 and L80 Oldsmobile 403 engines. Only the optional W72 Pontiac 400 received the "T/A 6.6" decal.

I passed on this car 10 years ago for $11k. 7000 original miles and was never registered. Automatic and documented thunder chicken hood decal delete. It sat outside behind a truck parts place in town for 2-3 years. At the time I just couldn't see paying stupid money for a belly button car.

it’s a Pontiac engine.
the 403’s hurt the prices, no bashing, I wouldn’t want a Pontiac engine in a 442.
as far as low miles, I know a collector with a handful, of low mile cars. Some still have the engine color on the oil filters,
I just can’t watch milkem auctions, dont like the people or even the colors they use in their set up,they had a ta roll roll across the block one time, their guy said the dryer hose on the Aircleaner was factory. Idiot.

X2,
There's lots wrong with this picture.
The Bandit movies and cars are cool. But, back in the mid/late '70s cars seemed to "perform" on visual appeal, not speed and performance; that's all they had to offer. After the smog engine hose monster catalytic converter '75 model year most any kid with a good performing pre '71 Cutlass could dust a new T/A.
I know the F bodies were fun to drive, but still I wonder; did this car sell from one attracted to that era of visual appeal, nostalgia, or?

The bashing of auction cars and prices never ceases to amaze me. If you have issues with these prices move on, you aren't mingling in these circles anyway.
I was offered close to 100,000 each for my 65s, twice. If someone wants the best of a certain car they will pay for it. Period.
