Only ones that come to mind, the pass side rear window needs help going down or else it pops off the track and sometimes when you shut it off it likes to do that thing where it tries to keep running for a bit.

 

Cruising down the freeway at 65-70 and occasionally there would be this loud brrrrr noise that lasted 4 or 5 seconds coming from somewhere from the front of the car, sounded like air coming through a confined area (heater box ) with a rag or something vibrating with the extreme air flow. Really had me perplexed for a while. It wasn't on long enough for me to isolate it. Finally after a few times and it was getting worse(longer) I found the generator bearing was getting dry and needed lubed. Who would have thought....Tedd

 

Comfortron Toronados may have a spring-like wire temp sensor? in a tube behind the dash, might be that device.

 

That's called dieseling and not a quirk but a bad tune or low octane fuel. I suggest you see a doctor

 

well considering its the stock carb that has never been off the car, and we run 87 in it maybe a combo? It runs sooooo smooth though

 

If the carb hasn't been touched since 97 it time to clean her up. Fuel and timings probably fine then.

 

An odd quirk of mine is it continues to run despite my best efforts to tune it to a stand still!!

I once owned a 1954 Olds 88, 2-dr Hdtp that the driver side door would only function by using the inside handle to open the door to get in, and the outside handle to open the door to get out of the car!

 

When the 400 trans up shifts into second gear I get a strange screech from the rear tires and it leaves 5' of rubber on the pavement! Very violent up shift...LOl
Seriously...this one has driven me nuts...With the heater control set to hot I get a hum or a harmonic out of the heater at 1700-3000 rpms? Sort of a wo wo wo wo. Only with the heat on and the temp towards Hot....10-15 years of this! I finally found it, I hope. The heater control valve (AC car) has a different size orifice in it compared to the original. I have not changed it out yet but Im banking on it. Puttin correct hoses and wire hose clamps on it soon. Change it out then...letcha all know.
The second was a fuel starvation problem. At the high end (48-5000) the engine would fall over on its self. Let off the gas and it would recover and go again. Looked at everything from the tank sock to the carb. Even tried a home made restrictor in the return line (AC car). Did this for the first 10 years I owned it. Then one day I pulled the fuel filter out and said to myself...self let me try pulling that rubber check valve out of the filter. Wa La! Now it will rev until it blows the bottom end. Lucky for me and the car the built-in rev limiter probably saved the numbers matching engine when I was a dumb kid with a heavy foot.

the only thing done in '97 was a new paint job, top and floor pans. the engine has only had basic maint done (plugs,wires,cap,coil,filters..ect) we have owned it the last 24ish years and the previous owner (original) had never done much to it. as far as i know the engine is a factory 89,819 mile engine without any major work.

In 1975, my Dad bought a 71 Delta 88 Royale 2 Dr. from a family friend. It was our first Olds, and my Mom loved that car. Dad got a really good deal on it because none of the interior lighting would work. As soon as you put in a new fuse and opened a door, it would blow. Dad's friend was sick of the car because he had taken it to a couple of places, and no one could fix it. My Mom drove that car until about 1980, when it got hit and my Dad did kind of a resto on it - new paint, interior, etc. One day while working on it, Dad comes in all excited about finding the lighting problem. One of the courtesy lights that went on the C pillar had a contact that was just barely touching the inside of the roof. He bent it slightly, and for the first time since buying the car we had interior lights.

 

I once had a tac (wired from the previous owner) that when I put on the blinker the tac would also blink

 

I get that same thing on my cutlass, never could figure out what it was. Also if I listen real close, I can kind of hear a noise like something is boiling. Maybe the coolant in the radiator, don't know the running temp cause I haven't hooked up the mechanical temp gauge I got yet, though the dummy light never comes on.

That and the bump steer, car wants to do a hard right sometimes when I step on the brakes quick, pulled the drums and the shoes look good, maybe air in the line or something. I've just learned to compensate since I have been dealing with a bunch of other stuff with the car. Now when I get into my girlfriends Nissan, I want to instinctively turn the wheel when I brake and have to remind myself I don't need to, haha.

 

Off thread topic but the pull during braking could likely be the soft lines. Whens the last time they were replaced
