We finally got paid on a few clunkers

Started killing them yesterday. Dodged a bullet on one 5.0 Ford Explorer clunked a rod. I looked under to see the damage only to see flames Had I not looked it could have been ugly. About 250K in new cars not PDIed get very close by.

The award of the most unspectacular went to a 88 Dakota. Most of them lasted at least a minute. The Dakota didn't make 10 seconds. One of my tech was about to cry over the 2dr Jeep Cherokee he had to kill. He's a big off road guy and it was the perfect rock crawler project.

We have over 300 clunkers, and just received payment on 35 so far. Also got rechecks on just as many. What a pain to get these cars done. Far to much paper work and time.

So what does the dealer do with the cars he or she is never paid for? Sell them as a used car? Seems pretty devious that dealerships are having such a hard time getting money from Uncle Sam through this great program.

The government said that we will get paid for all. I'm sure they will drag there feet.
For me I'm a little amazed at the cars that have been turned in. We have a few Jag's, BMW's, Mercedes, Lexus, Cadillac's, Volvo's and so on.

A guy I know just bought one of the bigger Ford motors out of a junk yard for the "scrap metal". Took it apart, cleaned it, replaced all the seals and bearings and it fired right up like new.

So much for sand in the motor huh?

There is hope for some.

I think I'd be worried about the oiling system personally John. It may fire up after that, but what do the oil passages look like? And how long will it last?

getting paid

i guess there are a couple of factors here that apply to slow payment. The first is the overwhelming # of cars that were traded in and who knows how many people they got trying to do all the paperwork , the second being this was a government program so there is always lots of bull to go through. the government has never been known for their expediency.

If it was done as it should have you will never get all the liquid glass out of the oil passages. If it was not the the dealer that blew it up is subject to a 20K fine per car.

Just think about this same government providing you healthcare. That is why people are protesting. Scary, very scary.

He doesn't care. Oil passages are just that... passages. So once the block was tanked and washed, theoretically all of it would be gone. It was just the bearings that were shot, and he was able just to get away with a quick polish of the crank...He did an immediate oil change after 15-20 minutes of running. He bought two of them and has less than $500 invested in everything including the parts. He figured if it lasts in his truck for a year, he did good.

Motor number two is getting a little more than a cleaning and a slap together I am told.
