Warehouse fire destroyed my 1967 Cutlass

I bought this car in order to part it out. It was a running/driving car, with tags and insurance when I picked it up in December. I had it parked in my driveway until Monday when I decieded it was time to move it. I had a buyer for the rearend and the engine so I moved it into my work space located in a local warehouse. Well, less than twenty-fours hours after putting it in the warehouse I got a call informing me the warehouse was on fire. It was a large fire engulfing the entire building. The next morning I entered what was left of the warehouse to find my car under the collapsed roof, scorched. You can't help but to laugh. At least it wasn't a 442.

What are the chances of that happening?? Not sure by the pics but I'm guessing there's still some salvageable stuff like engine/driveline? Sorry to hear about the losses of the car and the building. Should be a no brainer to proved the car was being stored there if the Ins company says anything..

So true. Thank goodness it wasn't a two door. A loss like that would have put me into tears.

No insurance. I don't insure cars I plan on parting out.

I do plan on pulling the driveline out of it in order to make up for some of the loss.

Fortunately, I didn't have too much invested in this car. But I really hated seeing the front clip get destroyed.

Man, your car got so hot she went and turned yella on ya. Things would certainly turn out differently if your car was a Plymouth and your name was Arnie!

I lost two floor jacks, two engine stands, a pair of jack stands and some shop lights. I removed my small tool box and a duracell battery because I was unable to lock them up in the trunk of this car. So fortunately they were in my home garage when the fire took place.

This car also had a brand new AC Delco battery and new shocks that I was planning on using on my 69 Cutlass. But not now.

I am glad it was not one of your good cars. Warehouse fires suck, my friend and his dad lost 4 that way. They still have 3, and plan to restore them.

You would think that the building would be insured and the owners responsible even if you don't have your own insurance

I would think so too, and if they are doing this commercially it should be sizeable, I think you were storing a proceless family heirloom, ( otherwise who the heck stores four door sedans inside) the pain and suffering must be worth at least 10K, let alone the value for an irreplaceable family heirloom....

seriously unless this is some freind who was letting you store inside you should be covered, how dod the fire start? ( hopefully not that new battery shorting out some wiring and causing the whole fire )

Seriously I would check what insurance the building had if you were paying for the space. It is part of doing business that they are insured I can not imagine anyone being allowed to operate this kind of business without it. Especially in an unsprinklered warehouse

Sorry to hear that. The car had a lot of good parts on it to sell off, when I stopped by to look at the headlight bezels. Any idea on what started the fire?

Sparks from a cutting saw next to a fuel tank. Dumb rooky mistake made by an employee.

To be honest, losing the car doesn't really bother me as much as losing the free storage space. Along with the use of the forklift and the occassional extra hands when needed. Nothing like getting help removing hoods, engines, or what ever else that requires more than two people to do.

For those of you who think the building owner (or their insurance company) should reimburse the loss:

Not a chance. Typically the building owner is responsible for insuring his building, and the renters are responsible for insuring their contents. Why would the building owner be responsible for my loss if I choose to turn his building into Fort Knox? That's my property, my responsibility.

---------
I'm sorry for your loss. Thank goodness it was just a parts car.

You are so right. And we are all out. I am out a car and some tools, another gentleman is out a car, all the employees are out of a job. and the building owner is out a building, a couple of car lifts, a couple of fork lifts and a massive inventory of used car parts.

And here is why...........a person I know kept his boat in a dry stack and a his boat met a similar fate. His POS boat was all of a sudden a rare valuable ect.ect ect...... His Walmart tackle box and rods and reels all of a sudden morphed into a $10,000.00 bass pro shop catalog! He fought with the Marina and insurance company for years. And to this day I do not bring up anything about fishing because he will go on a rant about how he was screwed. Screwed Hell! he was committing fraud.

The engine, transmission, and the rearend should have survived the fire, and I should be able to recover these items, but that depends on the salvage company. We are planning on lifting the car out of the building with a crane and setting it aside so I can pull these parts, after which, she is off to the crusher. But things could happen. A wall may collapse on it or it could get dropped during the removal process. Right now it is buried under a collapsed roof, heavy steel I-beams and burnt wood.
I kind of just wrote it all off. Somethings aren't really worth the trouble. Again, it is the work space that I lost that means the most to me. I place the value on that free space at somewhere around $450.00 per month. And I had access to electricity, car lifts and fork lifts. That won't be easy to replace and the HOA isn't going to let me do my hobby in the driveway of my home.

Good reason not to live in a neighborhood with an HOA.
