I once saw a car doing this. Driving 30-40mph on a flat, then watched the rubber roll off. It was a steel rim, though, so it sent up an excellent shower of sparks. It was a car with a bunch of kids in it.

I followed them at a distance on the highway for a mile or two before they got off. A cop picked them up as soon as they came off the ramp and was on them instantly (kinda hard to just let that one go by). I kept going, since the average cops don't like Lookey-Lous at 2 in the morning, but I imagine they got an equipment ticket and a tow (and maybe some booze charges). Similarly, I just can't see anyone driving that far without finding a place to pull over or getting stopped. It's not like it's subtle.

Also, that was a Subaru, no? What shape was the transfer case in after all those miles on that tiny rim?

Yes 2014 forester I am not sure at this time of any damage to drive train but I have seen mismatch tires wipe out transmissions/ rear end gears

I couldn't agree more that this was kinda out there, but I can only go off what I was told as I wasn't there to see it.

I'm sure that if you were, the story would be much juicier. The story that gets told would be pale compared to whatever really happened.

Had a car about 2 summers ago going down my road riding on all 4 flat tires doing (estimated 30 -40 mph) left chunks of rubber all over the place. Was loud enough to turn your head and think what the heck is that noise.

o.k. here's mine.this was back in about 1980 or so when i was in school.had a 65 88 4 door.i was the first one here in town with dark tinted windows.it was white/red interior.330.i called it the ghetto cruiser.my town bordered a lake.coming down main street when you got to the lake there was a t intersection.the "loop"went to the left.well it was winter and it was about midnight and we were the only car on the streets in town and kinda feeling no pain if ya know what i mean.coming down the hill and about a block from the lake it was like i kicked it in to neutral.the engine just rev'ed.thought thats weird.so coming to t interection and push on the brake..... and nothing right to the floor and the lake is coming up fast. well about the time i start to turn left doing about 40 it feels like i have a left rear tire going flat in a hurry, then grrrrrrrrrr, the lower trailing arm starts dragging on the ground.i open the door and look out and here is my tire still attached to the axle sticking 3 ft out from the car.my dad had a shop which was about 6 blocks away so i went up got the pushtruck came back jacked it up pushed the axle back in and pushed it to the shop.that was its last voyage.after that i moved into the 67 vista cruiser.

I used to work at a BMW dealer and we had a customer with a brand-new 850i come in and complain that the car kept telling him when the service was due (as BMWs do). We tried to explain that the sensors could tell better than the odometer what was going on inside the engine, but he finally (apparently) found some shop to disable the system/display and we placed bets on how long it would take until we saw him again.

Sure enough, three months later the car comes in on a flatbed with the owner steaming mad that his new BMW ate itself. Turns out that he wanted the system disabled because the ten-minute oil change place he was using couldn't reset the service light, and as he changed the oil it should know better or something (we suspect they changed the oil; they just didn't change the FILTER, and the car knows better).

Who DIDN'T know better was the oil change place, as they didn't remember to tighten the drain plug, which we guessed from the blown threads was 3/4 of a thread turned AT MOST when he last left their establishment. And thanks to the thorough job of disabling the "idiot lights", he drove for God knows how long without oil before most of the 12 cylinders gave up the ghost.

Not surprisingly BMW refused the warranty claim, but they did offer to buy the car as a training tool for its mechanics. I would LOVE to see what the inside of that engine looked like and know just how far it went running without oil...

I can fix it

Lower control arm beat as straight as possible and the cracks welded so they could get by

Nothing wrong with that as long as you use a good piece of wood. As strong as the frame it's attached to, it appears!

Not sure if this qualifies or not but this is a really great customer and he has dumped countless dollars into this DD

Currently has 817k on the car replaced engine once with around same mileage of car
He just dumped 10k into this this year

As a cool factor if he hits the million miles but wow he could have bought a nicer car lol

Guess he likes it.

I can't say that I disagree with his philosophy, but if I were going to practice that, I would
a) get a more interesting car to start with, and
b) learn how to fix 'em myself.

I would imagine that periodically dumping $10,000 into a '60s Olds DD could keep it going pretty much indefinitely.

Back in high school I was walking through the parking lot as my geometry teacher's daughter drove through the lot and straight into the auto shop. It was knocking something awful. When it was time for auto shop, I couldn't wait to see what was wrong with it. One of the rear wheels (slotted Halibrands) had only one lug bolt and nut left holding it on. As the wheel turned over the axle it was knocking as it slipped back and forth on the remaining wheel stud.

A lady I worked with heard that I worked on cars so she asked if I could take a look at hers. "It won't start" was the complaint. She neglected to tell me that she had run over something in the road and the car had stopped running before she had it towed home. Whatever she hit had pushed the fender liner into the engine and behind the timing belt cover, effectively stripping the teeth off half the belt. I told her to have it towed to the closest dealership and trade it in.

I am reluctant to admit, this is my prize trophy that I stil keep after almost twenty years. This is the result of using a .492 lift cam with non adjustable rockers with shaved pedestals on a 350 Olds. When the cam manufacturer requires adjustable valve train, there is generally a prescribed reason. Result was violent backfiring through the induction at higher rpm? I did, however manage to limp it back to my dorm. An adjustable roller rocker arrangement resolved the problem and never returned. A cheap education..

Seeing these pictures makes me feel better about driving my Buick The only repair I have left to do is fix the frame in the back and I'm good . I can't believe how people keep driving cars when they're making noise at you when your driving them . The noises you here are tell tale signs you need to fix it !
