Visiting Detroit & Ann Arbor: Suggestions

Have never been to Michigan. Arriving in Detroit at noon on a Friday with teenage son, and attending football game in Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon.

Looking for notable lunch, dinner and sightseeing ideas for the Friday. Local or tourist restaurants or activities are both ok

Make the drive to Lansing and visit the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum.

If you are not up to that, the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village are pretty cool, and the Ford Piquette Plant, where the Model T was built, is really interesting, too.

Find some place that serves Detroit style pizza, too.

Have fun!

X2 on The Henry Ford Museum! Allow a minimal of 4 hrs for the museum alone.

X3 on the Henry Ford Museum, the transportation section is excellent with lots of cool cars and planes. The famous Vinsetta Garage, located on Woodward Avenue (Woodward Dream Cruise) in Royal Oak (Detroit suburb), is now a great restaurant, especially if you're a car enthusiast. Vinsetta Garage was a performance mecca for Detroit street racers back in the 60's and 70's. The interior has all kinds of car memorabilia in it. The exterior is also a great place to get a picture with your classic car or hot rod, although I know you won't have your car.

You could spend a couple days there and not see everything. We have been going for years and every time we are there I find something new.

First choice for me would be the Henry Ford Museum. It is not just Fords and has several former presidential limos. You could easily spend a day there.

Sounds like you won't have the time to leave the Detroit/ Ann Arbor area. That's too bad as the best of Michigan is further north. But you and your son should have a great time where the others have mentioned.

Yeah, the Ford Museum! You could also check to see if GM is having tours at it's Heritage Center. See the Buick "Y" Job, the Lesabre, and other concept cars, along with the usual offerings.
