Vin Number Breakdown
I have some nice literature for this car:
I am curious if someone can help me break down the numbers on this car. The vin is 342571G105344. I know that i was made in Massachusetts from an online decoder but it didnt tell me much. The engine number reads 395558 2. Is there a way to tell if this is the original engine that came with this car? And also if it came with a 4BBL from factory? I also took the number off the drivers manifold that reads: 380001LH with an 04 underneath.
If anyone can tell me what any of these numbers mean it would be a huge help.

Sorry, your photos didn't show up. You may need to try some other way to post photos.
Here's a link with a couple pictures of a 1971 350 engine that shows you where to look for the vin stamped in the block. The first digit in the block should be a 3 for Oldsmobile. The second will be for the year, I'm gussing a 2 If your car is a 1972. The next digit will be a letter from the factory where your car was built, G for Framingham Mass. Then the rest will be the last part of your vin number. John

VIN breakdown information is covered in Chapter 0 of the Chassis Service Manual.
34257 corresponds to a V8 Cutlass Supreme Hardtop Coupe,
1 corresponds to 1971, and
G corresponds to the Framingham, Mass plant.
105344 is the sequential number.
395558 2 is the casting number for essentially all 350s, so you have a 350.
To find your engine number, you have to look here:

And, if you have power steering, a bracket for the power steering reservoir/pump will be in the way of being able to read the pad where your VIN derivative is stamped. I've had luck with a flashlight and a mirror in reading that pad with the bracket in the way but, if that pad is dirty, you will have to clean it off first before you will be able to see anything.
If your engine is original to the car, that VIN derivative should read 31G105344.
