VIN number on 1936 Olds

A friend of mine bought a 1936 Olds and we can't find the ID number anywhere. The original engine and trans is missing. Did Olds use the motor number for ID back in the thirties?

First question, did this car come with a title ? I know there are at least four Texas chapters of the OCA perhaps contact one of the chapters for someone who owns or is familiar with the 36' models. Hope this helps !
