VIN # to date of manufacture?

Does anyone know of a resource that I could input a VIN # and find out manufacture date? What I'm looking for is Manufacture date of an 87 442 that I brought home yesterday, Sticker in door shows March 87, I believe Olds stopped production in March also. Would like to know how close this one is to the end.

Mark

I did post this on the G body site also but no replies yet.

Mark, the VIN does not provide the information you're looking for and was never intended to. Think of the VIN as the registration certificate of the car, not it's birth certificate. The sticker on the door is a legal requirement at point of manufacture. The RPO and paint codes for your car should be listed on a sticker in your trunk deck lid.

The only way you'll find the actual build date of your car is from a build sheet or broadcast card from your vehicle. I don't know if GM in the US will have the information on your car, but you could check their web links to find out. I know there are no records for most of the 70's cars unless it was exported or built in Canada.

I'm not that familiar with the 87 G bodies, but I think the cowl tag on your car should show what week of March 87 your car was built. 87/88 RWD's have the most refined look of all those cars IMO.

Thanks Allen. I'll check the cowl tag for the week. I do agree the 87 / 88 had the best looking front end. I bought an 87 442 new, picked it up on Dec 26th 1996. Mine was built on Dec 19th, I only know that because it was ordered as an GM employee order, so the invoice was sent to our house showing the build date, ship date and date should arrive at dealership.

Mark, if you want you can edit your original post to correct an error like that. Just use the 'EDIT' button beside the 'Quote' one. That allows you to make any changes you want. I usually give a brief explanation in the 'reason' box such as 'corrected typo' or something like that. Just info for the future in case you need it.
