Valve Stem Seals

Valve Stem Seals

I was getting a puff of smoke when pulling away after idling for awhile. Probably the valve stem seals, so I thought I would change them. This is what I found,

Think they needed doing!!

Those are better than most!
I did a '65 442 last year, mostly because the left side was smoking all the time - bad!
Small pieces of seal clogged the drain holes, and filled the valve cover with oil - straight down the guides.
Fun to clean-out!
Replaced with the hard plastic ones.
Shimmed the 46 yr. old springs, too.

Eh, you still could a got maybe another 100 miles or so out of em. Yes, they are entertaining to change! The engine looks to be clean of sludge, thats a perk!

Wow - I am surprised that you just a few puffs! Those things are GONE! At least the heads are nice and clean.
I changed mine last year and not one was broke. Makes me wonder if they were changed long ago.
But my heads were NASTY. I could not even find oil return holes...
