When I got my Delta 88 it had a straight air cleaner hold down stud instead of the curved one. So the lid had to be upside down, it wouldn't line up the right way.

Anyway, I decided to keep it upside down because of the sound... and I swear I can feel the extra 2 horses...

I would like to see someone do a real dyno test on this theory, after all, an engine is just a big air pump, more air available, more hp??

When I drove an ambulance for NYC, we had one (#326) with a Ford 460, and we'd flip the air cleaner cover because the initial roar from the front when you'd put the hammer down would scare the crap out of the pedestrians and make 'em scatter .

The flipped lid and the loud sucking sound of the 4bbls opening wide provided many smiles per gallon for us back in the day! Good memories indeed

Happy Motoring

in simple terms, it seems to me that there's a limit to the amt of air that a fixed amount of fuel can ignite with...and there's no benefit to extra air unless the air is the limiting factor.

A candle will burn just as hot in a small room as it will outside.

So the question is, does the factory snorkel already let in all the air the engine could use ?

If I saw a meat wagon with lights flashing coming around the corner on two wheels with a crazed man behind the wheel, I'd run like Hell regardless of what it sounded like.

X2 - BTW, my Butt Dyno is calibrated, a well tuned instrument.

What is the engineering idea with that? Why not have just the "cold" air intake, why the hot air on the other side? My '68 has half the air intake my '87 has.

The "second opening" you speak of is the "heat stove pipe" from the block to the air cleaner, it's supposed to let hot air in for cold starts. i welded a plate across the bottom of my air cleaner and ran my snorkel through the front of the car in the grill. It's a 4" dia. tube that goes into the factory "l" shaped 4"-square reducer. You may not have a an actual spot to run the stove pipe from the block up to the air cleaner but it's there and smaller to take in hot air for cold starts none the less.

I did a Dyno about a month ago just before I went to see my engine builder so I could show him where my engines performance stands before he does my rebuild. It was a request from him actually. While Dyno tuning, the technician did a pull with aircleaner lid off. The engine produced more torque.

I tried installing an old fan belt the same size as the air filter on top of the filter to act as a spacer, to let more air in, and installed the Air filter housing lid as normal. This all fit, but my engine was bogging under medium to hard acceleration. When I removed the spacer (fan belt) the bogging disappeared. To much air for my jets???

I used a stock air cleaner housing for my custom built 455, cut off the snout, replaced it with two 4" tap collars, and ran dual 4" flex hoses to the inner fenders, for cool intake air. Works very well, and no one ever hear's me coming.
