Unidentified part

What is this? It was removed from a Fremont built 65 Cutlass 330 4 barrel, A/C car.

It's an add-on temp sensor port that goes in the upper radiator hose. The thermal vacuum switch is designed to switch the distributor vacuum advance source from ported to manifold vacuum if the engine starts to overheat.

Was this a aftermarket add on? I have never seen one on other cars.

Fremont car, odds are good it was delivered in California. I'm gonna say it was tied to CA emissions equipment, maybe a factory retrofit, and you'd probably find it in 1965-66 Service Guilds or Tech Bulletins.

I've never seen one mounted in the radiator hose but look in deaddds parts ID thread for one that went in the 66-67 thermostat bypass hose.

It's the kind of thing that would send an inexperienced judge into low orbit and highlights the need for comprehensive OCA judges' training.

Ain't the only time Oldsmobile tied a factory fix or retrofit into a coolant hose, either.

It was definitely a California delivered car, I bought it in 1980 from a person that purchased the car in California.
