Understanding Timing and advance

Can any one help me out with understanding timing. Basic question is when number 1 cyl is at top dead center and the pointer on the distributor is pointing at the number 1 spark plug how much timing would that be 0*? When RPM increases the spark has to be sooner? There for timing advances at higher RPM?
So the distributor I am using states: It comes with 24°@ 3200rpm.
It is a Mallory 9163401. So that means I am at 24* at that RPM?

It means, your initial timing plus the 24*.
So, if you have 12*@950 plus 24 @3200 you will have a total of 36*at 3200 with NO vacuum advance.
