Hey guys, brand new to the forums here. Hope ya'll are having a great memorial day. I have a question about a 455 motor. It's a W-30 out of a 4-4-2 and I was wondering if anyone knew what the advance should be ? It's got a Melling W-30 cam and an Accel HEI distributor. Any help on this would be appreciated.

 

With the vacuum advance lines plugged, I think 25 @ 3000 rpm should run well.
Then hook up your advance and see how she runs.
Back it off if need be.

 

That's what i run mine at, but i'm using a points advance. I'm not sure if hei adds more .

 

I suggest 12 deg. initial without vacuum advance hooked up. For an automatic, bring in the total of 36 deg. around 3000 rpm. For a stick around 4000 to duplicate stock curves. You can mix and match Mr. Gasket etc. springs to get the advance you want. After you are done, hook up the vacuum advance.

get an aftermarket adjustable vacuum unit, start at full advance them back it down to eliminate the pinging at part throttle. i would run as much as the car can handle.
My mild built 455 likes very little advance, but every Olds I have owned is different.

 

I got this from my super tuning "W" booklet, and I quote.."Basic stock setting of 14* BTC at 1250 provides 27* BTC timing above 4000 rpm" Hope this helps,and welcome.

The method (mechanical or electronic) of triggering the coil has nothing to do with the timing of the spark.
